I am sure there are probably a dozen threads discussing this particular topic, but my efforts at searching for them weren't very successful. So, with apologies in advance for that, how well do these kits really work? Which brands do folks find best? (I have seen the Nutnfancy Youtube vid on the CMMG brand, in which he had a lot of good things to say). What say the Gunnutz?

advanced search, set time to 36 months

search conversion in titles only in the black rifle forum.

Good luck.

There are about a hundred threads on the subject. Good luck.

Opinion seems to be CMMG is the way to go. Mine runs flawlessly.

I'd make fun of your search abilities but I seem to be having the same problem recently.

Heh, thanks for that. I wouldn't have asked if I had much luck with the search tool either.

I just got my CCMG kit, a bit cranky but as the day wore on it was getting better. I suspect it will be fine in short bit. It loved Stingers and ate Dynapoints fairly happily.

That's good to hear. I have a LOT of Dynapoints on hand.

I think I'll be going with the Spikes Tactical version. The same Black Dog mags but the entire unit including the .223 adapter is nickel plated rather than painted which will wear/burn off eventually. Also the O rings should seal against powder blowback around the adapter making it easier to clean and keeping the gasses/power down range and not back to your face. As much as practicable anyway...

I'd like to know if there's any issues with running a piston upper though? Edit: as it turns out I can just shut off the gas on my piston upper so zero problems gas wise I would think?

Yeah, I can see how that would be an attractive selling point for the Spikes. Basic mechanics and construction looks much the same?

Buy a dedicated .22LR upper or you will be unhappy with the accuracy and side effects of .22 LR in your upper.

That depends on what the shooter wants it for. My CMMG conversion will reliably hit clays at 25 yards. A dedicated upper might shoot better, but a) I don't care and b) it would cost tons more for the upper, optics, rail system, etc.

I was getting same point of impact at 50yards with with my CMMG adapter as 55gr 223.

My CMMG works great and is fun, but there's allot of good points in this article about the bullet size and the effects on accuracy because of rifle twist etc.

Overall we really need people to donate a bit to the Henderson case to keep the variants non restricted if at all possible...its the first step in making gunlaws that actually make sense.

So, you're near sighted and cheap... :D

I have a Tac-Sol dedicated upper mated to an Armalite lower. My so called shooting friends say it's ghey, but I don't care... It's fun to shoot.:)

Not true at all.

As already mentioned it depends on what you want it for. If you want to shoot precision groups off a bench you're going to want a dedicated 22 upper. If you want cheap ammo to train with or if it's important to you (like me) to practice with the same rifle setup you use when you shoot centerfire, then a conversion kit is the only way to go.

I've got the colt kit and I was very impressed with the accuracy at 50 yards and never had a single malfunction in about 200 rounds I fired the first time. The biggest pain with the colt kits are finding extra mags ... I only have the one mag that came with the kit.

I haven't used it in years ... too many other toys to bring to the range :)

This would be exactly my reason for being interested in the conversion kit. For precision .22LR shooting, I have other rifles.

You've got me there. Having said that, while I can justify owning a single Aimpoint CompM4, putting a second one on a .22lr plinker to duplicate my regular setup just didn't seem right.

Your priorities are just FUBAR man....;)
