How hard would it be to convert a single shot bolt action .22 lr in a .22 mag.
Any idea if possible what a gunsmith would charge?

Regards

I do believe that they have slightly different bore diameters, so to be safe you'd need a new barrel. New barrels aren't cheap, I doubt you could accomplish the job for any less than a new factory 22mag rifle costs

I confess to re-chambering a few s/shot Rifles from .22 L.R. to .22Mag. with no problems, Including an old solid frame .22 revolver a long time ago thats cylinder was just long enough and i am told it is still doing its duty on Wabbits. A VERY MERRY FESTIVE SEASON TO ALL YOU GUNNUTZ OUT THERE. Cheers .45-90

When you can get a new .22 Mag for a couple hundred bucks, and save your eyesight, why not. ;) Many bolt action .22's don't have a long enough action for the Mag, even in single shot it can't be loaded without removing the bolt on many, and the bore diameter is too small. Get a new Savage or what have you and have fun. :)

You are correct Ardent re b/action s/shots not being long enough in the action. We have an old local brand name s/shot (Slazenger) down here that is ok for .22mag. Re-chambering. Remember when an old .22L.R. bore is getting warn out the .22mag. treatment is the way to go if the action is genorous and strong enough. I have a little Stevens S/Shot swinging block that has been a .22mag. for a long time and my 60. y.o. eye's are seein ok. No Drama Queens Need Reply. :D

You must start with an action that is long enough to cycle a live case in and out . Most 22 will not. Mossberg rifles will. Send to can_payton@hotmail.com there is a lower case bar after can I am a retired for now Gunsmith and can resize the chamber. Ken

Those numbers the other way around might not work or keyhole. But a .224" bullet will go down a .223" bore no problem at all. It's not uncommon either. Many rifle bullets are somewhat larger than the bore they are to be used in.

Strength is the key here, primarily the bolt. If the bolt handle is brazed to the bolt body, don't attempt it (think Cooey 39 etc). The bolt handle on many 22's is the lug, so if you are going to do this, find one who's handle is forged from or goes through the bolt body.

Hmmm...this has got me thinking.

Would an old savage 24 (20/.22LR) be a good candidate for re-chambering? I know length isn't an issue, but would the chamber be strong enough?

I'd love to have this done to an old combo I have.

I would guess that this is an example of a rifle that would work really well modified as such. I wouldn't think that strength would be a problem here, as these rifles were available chambered for .22 Magnum alongside the shotgun barrel. Just my opinion. :)
