.22lr for my wife

So my wife's birthday is at the end of October and I was thinking about picking up a 22lr for her as a birthday present for her, something with iron sights and hopefully factory scope mounts as well. Thinking savage or maybe cz, we are both about to take the core hunter course and I'd like to pick something up we can use for small game somewhere down the road.

It will be her rifle but I will have use of it as well, like she has of my current long guns. I'm a lefty and she's a righty so I'd say a semi auto would be more convient for me to shoot but I might have to deal with a bolt. I like a bolt action, love the heavy barrel .22's as well as a wood stock. I'm sure a composite stock would be fine but a wood stock just feels nicer imho, any recommendations?

Aftermarket items would be a plus, access to bigger mags would be nice but I don't think the tactical route would be an interest for her in a .22lr.
 
After shooting my new Marlin 795 a few outings, I can recommend it. It is a very nice gun for about $150. I haven't experienced a jam of any kind yet after a couple hundred rounds of bulk. More accurate than I can shoot.

Lol, no no. My wife's a keeper, she doesn't get pissed if I bring home new guns or motorcycles or anything else I'm into for that matter. As long as I spend my own money on whatever I want and don't dip into our joint account that pays the mortgage etc I can do whatever, I'm the same with her. Her money is hers to do as she wants, hell she makes more money than I do anyway lol.

Back to the topic though, I wasn't thinking 10/22 to be honest. I handled a few and they didn't grab me. One cz I looked at was very nice, good weight to it and smooth as butter action. I like that the cz had iron sights, unlike the savage mk2 fv. If the mk2 fv had irons and scope mounts I'd buy one tomorrow for her, the heavy barrel savages are nice little guns. I just don't think a scope will be bought right away so irons will get her and I shooting it faster.
 
CZ 452 or 455. Get the right handed one for her first. My wife has one as do i. Both RH even thought I shoot left. After examining about 30 LH 452 I decided to pass. None of them had as nice of wood as mine and the test targets did not compare. Test targets do not reflect the rifles true potential and can usually be improved on with different bullets but the rifles that had the best test targets usually turn out to be the most accurate. For the reason I kept my old one and reach over to operate it. All of my other rifles are left handed.
If you like hers a lot you can get another for you.

CZ 452 or 455 Lux.

She'll swoon for the beauty of the lines and the grain of the walnut. She'll love it forever for its reliability and accuracy.

Also: Even though its an easy thing to fix (get rid of), I have yet to meet a female shooter, especially if they're a new shooter, who didn't want to snap their 10/22 in half in frustration the first time they took it out when having to fiddle with that retarded bolt hold open.
 
Cool, thanks. I always liked the CZ, any opinion on Henry lever actions? A co worker has a golden boy .22 lever action and swears by it. Lever action will be ambidextrous friendly compared to a bolt as far as I'm concerned.
 
A cz bolt action is a great choice for accurate shooting. However, if I were in your situation I would also look at the 10/22's on the equipment exchange especially those with swapped out parts. You can save quite a bit over doing it your self.
With a 25 round mag and a butler creek speed loader they are to me the better choice for a bit less accurate plinking.
And no, I have nothing on the EE.
 
If you love her, don't buy her a 10/22. :) In fact, as much as I admire the Marlin 795 as being the best semi out there for the money (and I do own one) I'd say get her a RH bolt action and don't worry about your needs. You have plenty of guns as it is...get your own damned 22. lol

Since you touched on it possibly being a small game rifle, I'd take that to mean she may plan on sling carry/long hikes...? If so, avoid the heavy barrels. Get her a CZ "American". A new 452 American if you can find one would be great, if not, one of the new 455 Americans would be an excellent choice. Standard-weight barrel, nice lines, will serve her well at the range too. They don't have iron sights~scope use only.

If you must have irons, the 455 LUX would be your gun, but, I personally don't believe they're great candidates for scope use down the road.
 
Is it a surprise? If not, take her to a few shops, and let her pick one that feels good. You wouldn't pick out a purse for her, why should you choose her gun? Too many nifty .22's out there (older models shouldn't be overlooked!!!). If it's a surprise, try to casually (good luck!) get her to handle a few different gems, and get a feel for what she likes.

10/22. any of their wide variety of models. they set the standard, scope ready, largest .22 aftermarket I know of. inexpensive for what you are getting too.

They haven't set any standard, only lowered it. The notion of buying a [comparatively expensive] rifle, only to have to change it up demonstrates a very low standard indeed.

That said, if OP's wife picks one, it may be the right one for her.
 
It will be a surprise, but we have a lot of the same tastes in rifles so I think I should be able to pick something out she will like the look of. I was looking at a couple cz's this morning at a local gun shop while I was waiting to pick up my new pistol. Nice rifles, the 455 American really caught my eye. Needs to handle a couple cz's as well as some level actions before I throw down on something.
