Looking to spend around 300ish on a .22lr mainly im looking for accuracy and MUST be bolt action.

So far i have my eye on a

Winchester wildcat ($288)
Savage mark II - fv
Marlin 925R-W/S ($275)
Remington Five ($230)

Any recommendations on any of these? Possibly something i haven't listed?

Rem 5

A great buy, not that well known in Canada, but if you check posts on Rimfire central under Charles Daly, you will find a lot of great info on these rifles.FS

I got a Marlin 925 for $270 shipped. It's light and balances well. I only shoot with irons so far and it's pretty accurate after I sighted them in. Trigger pull is a little heavy, but I don't find it bothers me. Other do the papermate pen spring swap and it lightens it lots.

Is that $300.00 including scope, or do you have some extra cash to throw into a scope and some rings, I know for a fact the Savage FV has no sights, so a scope is mandatory, The wildcat for sure has iron sights, I am not sure about the other 2. I own the Savage MK2-FV and it is quite a nice rifle for sure, but it does need a scope and rings before you can even shoot it. Also, I would really try and save up the extra +/- $50 for the BV version which has a much nicer wood stock on it.

Savage! Also he doesn't HAVE to get a version without iron sights, the "G" I've got still accurate even without a scope!

I didnt know that,

I am probably going to get a scope, but it would be nice to have the option to fire off of iron sights.

How comparable is the Marlin 925 to the fv? As it seems the 925 has iron sights and if you get the 925r you get iron sights and a scope, but who knows maybe the scope that comes with it sucks?

You can get Savage Mark II's with iron sites. Go for a model "G" and you'll be very happy! It was VERY accurate with iron sights and even more accurate with the scope I threw on afterwards.

Try to see how they feel based on how you will do most of your shooting.

I am a Savage Mark II owner and have no regrets.
Make sure to get an extra mag.:D

i have a savage mkII-f and i love it i shoot golf balls all day long at about 70 yards and not only that i use a very junky scope i think i paid 25$ for it at Canadian tire maybe 7 years ago.so thats a great gun with the worst scope possible and junk rings. the only recommendation after that is getting an extra mag and buy a scope good or not, and what i really want is a bipod. im thinking of modding my stock though it doesn't fit me as well as I'd like it too, i find my arms a little long for it so i want to make a pistol grip for it but other than that its an incredible gun. it has crazy good accuracy.

good luck have fun and be safe

i handled one of those remington model 5's, the quality was quite nice, but the rifle felt heavier than it actually was, maybe just the balance point or something:confused:

i also noticed they're not made in ilion, rather somewhere in europe, so maybe thats a good thing too:p

i've had marlins and never had an issue with them, except eventually getting bored and buying semi-auto's:)

I threw an NcStar on top of my MkII and I love it!

BTW if you're looking for a bipod let me know ;)

Whats the difference between the mark II "g" and "f" just wood/plastic?

A couple of years ago i shot a BTVS only complaint i had with it was that sometimes after firing it would hold the casing in the chamber and you had to fish it out with a key or a knife, probably didnt like the ammo though.

Im really interested in the FV though because of the heavy barrel, its a damn shame there isnt any iron sights on it. Any of the other ones iv listed have heavy barrels?

The V means heavy barrel. So the Mk II - G or Mk II - F are the sporter barrelled versions. The sporters have iron sights, and can be fitted with a scope (don't know if they come with the bases like the FV does?). The heavy barrels don't have sights.

The Savage is a lot of gun for the money. No, it's no CZ, but it's plenty accurate for my purposes.

Since it's missing in the list above, B - Laminate.

"G" = Walnut stock, normal barrel, iron sites, tapped, 10 round mag (approx $226)

"F" = Synthetic stock, target barrel, iron sites, tapped, 10 round mag (approx $249)

"FV" = Synthetic Stock, target barrel, no iron sites, scope bases included, 5 round mag (approx $278)

"FSS" = Synthetic stock, normal barrel, stainless steel action, iron sites, tapped, 10 round mag (approx $273)

"FVT" = Synthetic stock, target barrel, peep sites, 5 round mag (approx $401)

"BV" = Wood stock, target barrel, scope mounts, 5 round mag (approx $342)

"BTV" = Thumbhole wood stock, target barrel, scope mounts, 5 round mag (approx $393)

"BTVS" = thumbhole wood stock, target barrel, stainless steel action, 5 round mag (approx $442)

The prices are very rough. My "G" was $289 plus taxes brand new from the local gun store so expect prices to fluctuate.

A couple of years ago i shot a BTVS only complaint i had with it was that sometimes after firing it would hold the casing in the chamber and you had to fish it out with a key or a knife, probably didnt like the ammo though.

I've got that problem, it's an ammo problem though. By changing my ammo I pretty much got rid of the problem.
