I may get nomination for stupid question of the day, but is it OK to shoot 22lr in the gun for 22 rimfire mag? Similar way people shoot 38 special in 357 mag.

I have used 22LR in a revolver cylinder that was 22 WMR. wrong cylinder, whoops. No issues in that instance, the thing that tipped me off was occasionally getting a split case. But I doubt its reccomended.

22 LR in 22 mag will split the case. BUT if you have 22 winchester rim fire, then these can be used in a 22 mag chamber.
Be sure you research 22 WRF so you can understand what round I am referring to.

I think a safe rule of thumb would be to simply read, and abide by the data stamp on the gun's barrel. Whether or not you have an issue attempting to do otherwise, I'd say this advice will help you make sure you keep your fingers, your vision, the side of your face, etc. Not trying to sound overly dramatic, but I simply don't know why this question keeps popping up. Never assume that because 22LR is relatively low-powered, it doesn't mean there isn't any risk involved.

I occasionally forgot which cylinder I was dealing with when shooting my old NAA mini-revolver. Lots of split cases and I could usually tell immediately from the fact the bullet would have a hard time hitting paper at 15m.

When the LR case splits or ruptures, there could be particles spit back.
It is not a good idea.

This ^^^ Especially if the case brass is weak and splits back into the head where there is no chamber wall to stop flying particles of hot powder. Those things sting on the skin and I would hate to get one in the eye.

I only did it once in a convertible cylinder Ruger revolver by accident and had some trouble extracting the split cases. Immediately I knew what I had done.

There should really not be any damage to the gun because bullet diameter is the same. It is just undersized case diameter which causes the split cases not overpressure of the cartridge.
