22lr in a 22wm

I was at the gun store today, and the guy was trying to sell me a Savage Model 42 (no worries, I actually want one).

However, I was asking for the 22LR version, and they only had the 22WM. He told me to not worry, as I can shoot 22LR in a 22WM rifle.

Is this true?
 
Exactly. Dont do it. Use the intended ammo. Im more interested in knowing where you found a savage model 42 .22wmr?

I was told they wont be available for another 2 months. I really want this gun.
 
This might not be rimfire per say, but do any of you have any experience shooting 410 slugs out of this gun or similar? And, is this a viable option to upgrade the stopping power of the 22lr version?
 
I remember seeing a chamber insert somewhere that allowd you to do this ... I mean in a dire straights situation it PROBABLY would work ... You COULD probably ram a 22wm into a 22lr if you were desperate enough .. ... I would not recommend either and the salesman sounds like he haven't been using bore solvent in a well vented area if you know what I mean

This little shop in my town, the owner went to buy some at a gun show. I don't know all the details, it was his only one.
 
Hey jonyork~please don't take this the wrong way, but somewhere HIGH on the list of gun safety rules is to read the data stamp on the barrel, and feed the gun the ammunition it was made to shoot. Period. There are concerns beyond "whether or not it might work"....like keeping your fingers, your eyes, and your face in the same condition they were in before you started messing around and breaking that rule. Based on your .410 question, it sounds to me that you're trying to find "the perfect gun" that might do everything you need it to...but look around CGN, pretty sure you'll find that such a thing doesn't exist.

And...as an aside...if the gun store employee told you that you can shoot .22lr in a rifle chambered in .22WMR, he/she ought to be looking for a different line of work. Stubblejumper is 100% right~idiot.

Not insulted in any way. I know the basic rules, just wanted to see if this was similar to a 22 short in a lr, or a 38 special in a 357 mag. There are a bunch of special cases, and just wanted to clarify what the salesman said. As for the 410, they were trying to hawk some slugs to me for bear protection. I never took him seriously on that one, but it still piqued my curiosity as per the usefulness of the 410 slugs
