I am looking to buy a CZ rimfire for plinking in the field and shooting small pest like crows.
I did,not know wich is the best:22lr or 22magnum?
My range will be maximum 100yards.

.22lr, .22WMR, .17HMR~they'll all kill crows, depending on how close you can get to them. They're smart birds. If I was after a crow-killing rimfire, I'd pick a .17HMR for the reach they have. Crow/groundhog~.22WMR. Mostly target/plinking and the odd crow~.22lr, if the crow is dumb enough to let you get close enough. :)

I think if you want to make shooting crows easy but expensive go .17hmr, don't bother with the .22 mag. But if you want to become a better shooter, and have to employ a better understanding of ballistics to shoot the crow, go .22lr. There is no substitute for the .22lr when it comes to sheer practice time, low cost, versatility of ammo selection etc... Another thing to consider is that many .22lr firearms will shoot hyper velocity ammo quite well. A stinger going 1600+ fps has close to the same short range energy as a .22 mag. Even velocitors have an impressive 1400+ fps velocity and they hit really hard. So really how much do you want/need an extra couple hundred fps or extra dozen ft/lbs of energy? It's really not a big difference when were talking about crows under 100yds. Plus you get the added versatility of being able to also use subsonic ammo for discreet plinking or small game hunting without attracting a whole lot of attention.

.22lr is superior for those reasons in my book. If you really want more than that, the next logical step up in my mind is .17hmr, it's very fast and flat shooting so it's easier to hit targets far away because you don't have to factor in drop, but it blows around in the wind easy, it's really loud for a rimfire, and it gets really expensive to shoot.

Just my 2 cents.

Don't disagree with any of that, but here in Ontario...in the fields I hunt groundhogs on, there isn't a CHANCE you'd get into crow range with a .22lr. Then again, they've been dodging bullets a while there :) and take off the second we set foot onto the hay fields. We carry .223s out there these days, so if they land, it had better be somewhere out of sight. 99% of the time, they take off and just keep flying. Like I said, smart birds.

A 17hmr or 22wmr are better than 22LR in terms of ballistics. They shoot flatter and are less prone to wind drift. But, they are more costly to shoot.

their is no doubt that a .22lr will drop a crow with a body shot out to 150yrds. i bought a .22wmr because i wanted more punch. only negitive is the cost of ammo is 3x the .22lr

I have over a dozen .22's...love all of them! If you have only one rimfire, go .22Lr....if it's just another rifle, spoil yourself. For practical crow gettin'...depends how far away you wish to be.

If you've posted in front of your wife: get them all! Crows are a very serious problem....

Some people haven't used a rimfire in their life, nor shot anything living.
Yet, have been target shooting for years.

I'd chose a .22wmr for crows. Or a .223
But around here, I think the regs may say a shotgun is required, don't know.

play fair...

This is a member who does have a big trader rating. Have you ever inquired about his sales? I have...never anything rimfire! Besides...selling things and, using things are not really the same thing...the last person in the world I would let near my car with tools would be a car-salesman!

Your point(mikeystew)...I'm certain this is the very first post for such a topic...(lol, 22 mag vs lr)

One more step (if anyone's even reading) I have never owned a CZ period...I'm a fan of shootin' irons and, related trivia. It's a safe bet we all are...If there was a major difference in "platform" someone here will know. IE: Platform between a Remington 597 22 lr and, 22mag is 'nil. Probably not true for all manufacturers...(not knowing, I would ask here...I love getting spoon-fed here and, when i can, contribute)

Thought my comment might not go over well with some, but im sorry... If you've been a member of the site since '07, have a high trader rating and nearly 400 posts...

Even if the question was an honest one, the search function does work and this question has been asked to death since the dawn of the internet, not to mention google, google is a wonder tool for people who have questions they dont want to get flamed for asking.

This question is like me asking 30-30 or 300wm for whitetails... bush league

you need both dude. 22lr CHEAP ammo and like everyone else said more then enough power for birds at 100. 22wmr is deadly though. by far my favorite gun is my savage 22mag. 40grain cci jhp ended 3 coyotes today. everyone needs a 22lr though nuff said.

22lr is $20 for 525 rounds
22wmr is $12 for 50 rounds

i dunno how far your shooting but man i can accurately shoot cci stingers out of my marlin 925r at 250 yards and hit a 2 inch steel plate consecutively and have taken it out to further "LOB" distances than that ... and i just use a cheap canadian tire scope i think its a centerpoint or something.. im looking into a Nikon Pro staff for .22lr and probably could even improve more

you need both dude

I think this is well said. :) .22WMR has to be the caliber least-used by my circle of friends, yet, the rimfire cartridge I think I have the most respect for. I shoot factory (Hornady) .223 ammo. in my main hunting rifle, so when anyone mentions the high cost of .22WMR ammo., I smile a little inside.

I like to shoot allot, so if I could have 1 rimfire, it would a .22lr. Next one to add to the collection should be .22WMR, then .17HMR if you want to play a little. I'm still so impressed with how flat-shooting HMRs are.
