.22LR Richardson Ground Squirrel Ammo

Hmm, seems I should just stick with the Mini Mags for now. Thanks for all the help guys.

Honestly - I don't know why you don't try out some of the cheaper stuff - I buy the Federal Bulk Pack Copper washed HPs for 13.99 for 525 rounds at Ukrainian Tire, and I am terribly satisfied on the results on gophers. If you are really expecting one round to be of great difference, you probably need to change to .17HMR or .22 mag - honestly I don't see how one HP .22 is going to be that different than the next - try the Federal el cheapo's. You won't be dissappointed - and even if you are, at 13.99, I think you'll live;)

I will be honest though - part of the reason for my decision is my 10/22 with 2 MWG 50 round drums - I'm not one for precision with my .22 (thats what my .17HMR is for). If I miss the little bugger, I'll just follow him with rounds until I catch up. So more ###pensive rounds really don't have a lot of value for me.

The difference is fipping over dead or crawling around for a while, try either mini mags or yellow jackets you will see a difference. Not hmr sort of damage but definitly a cleaner kill.

IMO Remington .22 Game Loads are king.

Here here! :dancingbanana:

I love the game loads, they work great. If you are looking for a cheaper round, the Federal bulk pack 36gr HP work pretty good two. Those are the two types I use to whack those furry little critters. :D

I've always had good luck with Remington "yellowjackets " there 33 grain hollow point bullet is moving at about 1500f.p.s. which i think is 100 f.p.s. slower than Stingers , however i've heard of people having trouble with the CCI's in their firearms . The yellowjackets have alwalys grouped well in my .22's , as a rule of thumb , if your rifle's are sighted in 2 inches high at 25 yards that about zero's them at 100 yards , which is about the maxium range for the .22 long rifle round .the Winchester "wildcats" say their high velocity but they come out at roughly 1200 f.p.s. , there 40 grain solid bullets, down range i think the hollow point adds a little punch. hope this helps , good shooting Joe

Good to see a few supporters of Remi Yellow Jackets. My Marlin60 shoots them just fine. You can feel the extra 'crack' over standard ammo.

Yellow Jackets are a bit more expensive than some ammo, but still reasonable.

Stingers are useless out of the same gun.

Because I bought one of the first .HMR's in town and put it through the ringers. Compared to a WMR, the HMR couldn't hold a candle to it. 70 yards was the max for any external damage to a gopher. past that, the bullet never exited. A WMR would still blow blow chunks past 100. Even a good .22 LR will make them 'pop' at longer ranges that a .17 caliber grain of rice. Close range/velocity = good things. The .17 wouldn't do what a .223 can. That's what all the gun rags were saying though. The whole red mist thing they swore up and down about never materialized. Rather chunks would come off. Guts would pull out. But my .22 does that too. I initially bought matching rifles in the HMR and the WMR and was going to keep the best of the two. I kept the WMR. So I can say I tried it at least, before ranting about what it can't do. But now, two .22 WMR's later, all I have left are .22 LR's. They do all I need, for way less money. At the ranges we normally shoot gophers, it packs all the punch we need and we still leave the fields clean. ANd I've learned to not count out the .22 at long range. I used to tell guys my longest witnessed kill with a .22, but nobody belives me. All I'll say is an accurate rifle can still deliver the goods way out there. As for the HM2, I thought it was a silly idea to begin with, and never tried one.

i still think you're on crack. I have several lr's and have had several HMRs. No comparison. Then again, I STILL have the 22 LR's, and none of the HMRs - I can reload Hornet ammo for the price of 17s, and there's no comparison between the Hornet and any rimfire of any sort

Just because the .17 HMR and .22LR are both rimfire doesn't mean it is like comparing apples to apples. Each cartridge is designed to do something different. Just about every .17HRM owner I know still owns a .22LR. It's all about picking the right tool for the job.

I have to agree the right tool for the job, every gun cabnet needs at least 1 22.

Prosper I have to agree the hornet take not so loud and effective to a new level, I can't wait to give the k-hornet I added to the inventory last fall a test drive on the gophers. But I don't think I'll sell the hmr because it is nice to not have to reload all the time, it only takes 20 min to go buy 500 rounds of hmr

In regards to the WMR and HMR damage debate that Pharaoh2 eluded to, I have to agree with him. I also have shot the WMR and HMR side by side during a gopher shoot and WMR is hands down more destructive on gophers. I have had the same expericense in that the HMR past about 75 yards normally slumps gophers over. Yes it kills gophers effectively but the WMR just has more umph.

Right now in my safe I have one WMR and one .22 LR. I ended up getting rid of my HMR. I did enjoy actually hitting a pop can at 200 yards consistently with the HMR but i still chose the WMR.

So far my longest shot on a gopher with a .22 LR is about 110 yards. Nothing too spectacular but it was a well place shot. He/she just fell over. No flipping around. I know I can go longer but i havn't had a chance to shoot in a while.

The local co-op here has federal 525 bulk packs on sale for $11.35 each. Damn I think Im going to buy 10boxes.

Heck, buy 20! Thats a good price, and the Federals work great on gophers. The best price I've found is 13.95 at Wholesale Sports.

Buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep! :D
