.22lr vs 17hmr

OK what I Originally wanted was a Tik Tac Tikka T3 Tactical, in .308 win but the cost of the gun is huge..... so i figured for 1/10 of that I can get a little rim fire, cheap cheap. So .17hmr it is.......
Now my gun lovin friends.... which one????
I want synthetic, with bolt, no remingtons!
And if it comes with a scope than great!
And before you all start biting my head off about why no remmy, that's because everyone has one, I like the underdog!

I have lots of .22's and the Savage 93R17BTVS - Blued model, Jacaranda stock and I love it, good quality and accuracy. I don't think the issue of ammo cost should be a consideration unless your planning on expending thousands of rounds each month.
I often take both calibers to the range, shoot 50-100 rounds (1-2 boxes) out of the HMR and perhaps 250 rds. or more out of the .22. At 50 yards, both caliber's are accurate. At 100 yards the .17hmr is more accurate. And I agree with other comments that at 100 yds with .22 you can get quite a spread on a target.
Either rifle is fun. If you afford, buy one of each and you'll have the best of both worlds.

Apples and oranges.
All 17hmr use Premium bullets.
Not so with 22 magnum, 22lr etc.
The price difference is the cost of the Vmax and XTP bullets.
I have several 22's , 3 , 17 HRM's and a couple 22 mags. They are all equally fun to shoot. But at 100 yards my 22 magnum is my most accurate rifle. The 40 grain bullet is far affected by wind when compared to 17HMR. I bought several bricks of the 17 when it was around $10.00 for 50. All of my HMR rifles are CZ's.
I guess if I was only punching paper I'd buy a 17 HMR. FS

Sorry,if I've read this posting correctly it seemed cost was a main issue.
So for BEST Value for the buck...find one of the old Cooey single shots in 22rf.
When registration used to cost,they were being given away but I'm sure you can still find 1 under a C.
These were the guns a lot of us cut our teeth on,learned to shoot and moved up and on from.Seriously I have found some of these old barn gun cooeys that shot unbeleivably well even with rusty old open sites.
With the money saved ,buy lotsa bricks of good old cheap 22RF and shoot til yer fingers sore.Then when you can aford to expand your expenditures do so as the budget allows.
If a few cents a round makes a big difference in the budget,save on the rifle and find an old Cooey ss and have fun.

The Win 1890 originally came out offered in .22WRF(which was the .22mag of it's day)now with the hot CCI and stingers it's not so hot anymore.
But it is still offered because many of us still use those old 90's,62's old gallery guns,and at about the same price as .22 Mag you can shoot the .22WRF in the .22Mag and not blow the game all to hell!

Well, you see, it's like this...
Oh, well, that too....
Actually, since none of us would prime our own rimfires, "reloading" a .22 or the .17 would pretty much mean "plucking the pill" and goofing with the powder or bullet. Since removing a seated rimfire bullet is a very dangerous proposition if not done correctly - or if the improper tools are used - most don't bother.
That, and the fact that there are so many loads out there already...

Well I read all the postings and you all need a 22lr .17 and the 22Hornet.
Different tool for different jobs. my M6 22hornet and 3" 410 and slugs rides in the Jeep and the Kayaks. My .17 is my squirrel gun and the BuckMark carbine is the grouse harvester. Heck boys save yer beans up and buy em all we gunnutz !!!! lol !
