22mag and 17hmr

I thought the thread was .17 and 22 mag, when did it become a .223 reload club event?

I love knowing I can carry 50 rounds in a single pant pocket of either calibre on a long hike and it's no sweat. I especially like the Idea I can take a shot(or numerous) in any ground condition and I don't have to search for the brass in the tall grass or mud. Having to take it home and shine it up or run it through my tumbler to save .10 cents a shot? My time is worth too much to me. More over magazines are 20 dollars and most every variation holds 10 rounds rather then being held to a maximum of 5 like it or not.

For those who understand, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't no explanation will suffice.
 
For s**ts and giggles, I shot at a couple of hockey pucks with both the 17hmr and 22mag. At 25 yards both blew right through. At 100 yards only the 22mag made it right though.
As far as accuracy is concerned, out to 100 yards the difference between the 2 is fairly small. For example, at 100 yards with 22mag I'll probably shoot an average of 1.0-1.5 inch group. With the 17hmr at 100 yards, probably a .75-1.25 inch group. At 200 yards, I find the .17hmr seems to be much more accurate than the 22mag. Though I haven't tried that new hornady 30 grn 22mag ammo at 200, perhaps the better speed and better shaped bullet will make a difference for longer shots.
 
Power difference between 22 mag and 17 hmr dont really matter to me... I prefer 17 hmr. less curve 0-100 yards.

If you want power then just get your 223 or 300 win mag..... I mean. to each rifle its purpose.

Still trying to win the popularity contest eh? :) I'm aware of the number of manufacturers. As I previously posted I've looked into buying one, and that didn't sway me.

The magnum rimfire doesn't need to be defended. They have their place and their fans. The OP asked for opinions why there seems to be so little about them. Several replies stated their reasons they feel it is not for them. You obviously feel different. No need to take offense to the different opinions.
 
I used to have a Marlin in .22 wmr
It shot fantastic and was all I ever needed for varmint shooting.
It was the reason I never seriously considered a .223.
I never had any need to stretch shots much past 200 yds.
The wmr ammo is cheaper, the accuracy was all I required and more importantly for me, the cost difference between the rimfire rifle compared to the centerfire would buy a crap load of ammo.
Thats not to say that the rimfire is better, it's just that it was exactly what I needed at that time.

I've had a 22 mag in the past went up to a triple deuce....found at long range wind played havoc with the little 22 bullet...went to a 243....found that it was too loud...went back to a 22 mag for coyotes out to 200 yards and will use my deer rifle if I want to reach out there....

each one has a benefit and a drawback....I should know I've spent enough money finding out...:D
 
They are both great rounds. I had to see what all the hype was over the 17HMR and picked up a slightly used CZ 452 American a couple years ago.....this is a fun little gopher whacker. It really flips them, much more fun than a 22LR...and, mine shoots one MOA to 100 meters also. I put an old 3.5-10X AO Leupld with a tapered cross-hair reticle on mine, works great.
 
honestly, 17 hmr and 22 mag are kind of equivalent..... they both get the job done. They are both fine rimfire rounds.

17 hmr is flatter and has less terminal power. 22 mag is more powerful. Whatever, really. They both kill small game....
