I have been accused of being stuck in the 70s and have done absolutely nothing new in cartridge design or wildcatting. This may or may not be true, but let's talk 23 caliber......I have been envisioning a 90 or 100 grn .234 bullet from a 308 case with a 30 degree shoulder.........possibly from a 284 case, maybe a 300 Sav case......I am capable of having several visions at once. I'm pretty sure if I buy the dies Marshal @ Matrix will make me bullets, Huntington will make any dies I can send them fired brass for, and Dave Kiff will make any reamer I send him drawings for, so it is do-able. I happen to have access to a full barrel making set up so all I have to do is buy the button. I'm thinking a 1-8 twist for 90-100 gn .234 bullets.
Any comments on this possibility? I might even apply to SAAMI to have it legitimized.............

For Reference;

23 Pipsqueak...........23-222 Rem Mag/204 Ruger

234 Lynx................23-250 Sav/22-250 Rem

234 Hyrax..............23-08

234 Penguin...........23-6.5X55

230 Douglas..........23-284 Win

??????? Why would you tag me in this? I have never expressed any interest in a .234 caliber cartridge, nor am I really interested in wildcat cartridges anymore.

But I say have at er. It's as good a time as any to spend a pile of dough on a custom project that performs the same as existing cartridges,

Douglas, I am a struggling father of 4 if you feel like you have too much money......

Otherwise, I'd probably have notions of doing similar things. Like splitting the awesomeness of the .277 and .284 calibers by creating.......the .2805 Awesome. I'd use the 8x68s case blown out and 30 degree shouldered just to make sure the case was expensive and cumbersome to make. It would use a 164gr VLD. If I was to do the load development it would likely use H1000, 7828 or RL25 to reach 3100fps in the 25 3/8" barrel it would normally wear, but if you load it it'd be more likely 3423fps.

For the record, I am being tongue in cheek facetious. Have fun!

I think its an interesting idea.

As far as bullets go maybe a custom swaging die would be more economical than having custom bullets made? You could run .243 bullets of your choice through the die to end up with the end dia you require. I think Lee will make swaging dies to your dimensions for pretty cheap.

I'm sure you're well aware of this option though.

I reckon most of us were born too late to really get in on useful wildcatting. Now there are a few things one can do that are at best redundant and at least redundant.

I was in Australia for a time and a .25/303 (they call it a .303/.25) was a common wildcat that was a good kangaroo slayer. I don't see much about it in N.A. I reckon it would make a good deer/coyote round.

My thinking is to confuse those provinces and territories that have the 23 cal law, like Yukon and Alta used to when I lived there.............however in the light of a new day............who cares? We have 22 cal bullets from 30 grns to 90 grns and 24 cal bullets from 55 to 105 or heavier, so there is a huge overlap already with nothing significant to gain, except having the dubious distinction of having the smallest legal caliber in those places which stipulate 23 cal for big game.

The 7mm already exists on every case from 223 to the RUM, nothing new there..........I hunted briefly with a 7mmX300 WM.....25 years ago, identical ballistics and case capacities, same with a 7mm X68 30 Deg imp I used for a hunt in Texas, identical case capacities and ballistics as well. I have the reamers for these two still, I believe.

My first question was why but after reading this I changed that to why not....seems like reason enough to me. Be fun to have access to a .23 caliber just for the confusion factor....lol

:)Go for it. Who knows what advancements to that calibre you might bring about or promote. If that's what interests or intrigues you, give it a whirl.;) Nothing ventured nothing gained.
For me, I enjoy the 70s, what came about then, and earlier as exemplified by my choice of smaller or basically varmint calibre. My 219 Donaldson Wasp.

I think the 220 Swift case would be perfect for this project. You'll need to up the bullet weight to 127 grains or so though to really make it shine.
