I have a Mark V Accumark in .240 weatherby that I have owned for a couple of years now. I have never used it on any game except coyote's. It shoot's Swift Scirrocco's very well. I plan to use this gun on a muley Doe early this November and am concidering it for Whitetail. Now I do not believe in using too small of a calbre and previously 25/06 is the smallest I have used on Biggame.

I do however feel that .240 is quite cappable of a clean kill on a deer BUT...............in the real world of hunting, what if I have a fringe hit ? concider that our deer here in sask. tend to be big, and interested in staying alive as long as they can.

Do you guys feel this round is an adaquate, ethical choice of trophy whitetail hunting?

yup......go and kill one like Milo's..... :D I've spent a few hours daydreaming about this cartridge myself...never owned one though...yet.......been thinking about one for my extra 700SS action.....but then I keep thinking 6-06Imp too :? 8)

What bullet are you planning to use?

For all practical purposes the .240 Wby is just a 30-06 case necked down with radiused shoulders and a belt added (more for show than anything). Even the bolt opening is the same at .473". There's no doubt that the Wby will take deer with a clean shot.

But If I was shopping for a smaller caliber like that I'd just get a 25-06.

How much for brass :?:

SC........................

speaking for myself, if this were a factor I'd have to give up shooting..

50 brass would last me 10 years in a hunting rifle...I'd spend more on trail lunches in 10 years :D

Looks like I'm the only guy who's voted NO...

surely it will kill deer, but 'trophy' bucks are big, and dont always stand broadside at normal hunting distances.

if you got a 300 lb brute standing quartering towards you three football fields away at last light of the last day of a tough hunt, would you rather have a 6mm bullet or a 7mm or 30 cal... :?:

me, If I was looking for a rifle that I wouldnt hesistate taking any shot possible on a big buck, I'd be looking at a 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag (or H&H, Norma, 30-338, etc etc)...180 gr. Barnes TSX's...

240 Wby is a great cartridge for smaller deer and long range predators, at least it seems that way on paper

I've shot a truckload of deer, large and small, with the 6mm Remington and the 100 partition. Shots have been right out to just over 350 yards. Rarely had to shoot a second time, regardless of presentation, and a couple of second shots were found to be unnecessary, once the deer was opened. I would say it is quite adequate for the job. That being said, I do prefer the 6.5-284 or 270 Win for trophy sized animals, though. Eagleye.

I couldn't agree more, that is why I am questioning my desire to even try the .240 out.

You are hunting deer, not grizzly bears.

Use the 240 and a good quality bullet like your Scirocco or a Partition and you will be eating venison.

I voted yes. How could it not be enough? Maybe if you were taking a Texas Heart shot at very long range, but come on nay-sayers: a 100gr TSX @ 3300+fps isn't enough? I bet that would break both shoulders on a broadside 300 yard shot. Try the rifle out. It will be a new experience and another notch on your belt; without being a cowboy.

Hunting will always be about getting into position so that a quality presentation can be offered then putting the bullet in the right place, trophy or no trophy animal.

If you can shoot that thing and hit a softball every single time, with a quality bullet, the 240 will work. Give wildcat bullets a shout. Maybe they have some 115 to 120gr 6mm hunting bullets by now.

Even with a super big 30 cal, I would decline a Texas heart shot on any unwounded animal. Especially one at extended distances. Animal before EGO.

Do your job and let the bullet do its...

Not my choice but the .240 is capable.
You'd want to use the best quality & heaviest bullet you can get and place it though.
Personally I prefer a bit more gun.....in fact a LOT more gun.
My 8mm Mauser is the rifle I bought for deer.
