pros and cons on these for deer. I see the Vanguard 2 is chambered in the 240....hmmmmm

Its going to be used for coyotes, wolves, deer and the odd elk, moose and bighorn. I've had a 25/06 before but never a 240 WBY. The idea of a turbo charged 243 looks good.
I shoot Partitions, good luck with them. Would be 100gr in either caliber. Care to share your thoughts on the 240 and 25/06 with that weight bullet?

My concern would be ammo cost and availability if I wasn't a reloader. As far as bullet selection goes, a 100gr TTSX in either is all you need or a smaller V-Max for varmints.

Even as a reloader - how easy is it to get .240 Wby brass? It is basically a necked down, belted .25-06, so performce will be down with equal weight bullets and pressure. Barnes no longer makes a 100gr 6mm bullet. The heavier .25-06 bullets are probably better for moose/elk - that option isn't available for the .240 Wby. The .240 is neat though, and that has to be worth something too.

If you want a really hot little 6mm, and something different, then why not launch 100gr bullets at well over 3500fps with the .244 H&H?

I agree with what 1899 said. 240 wby is proprietary brass and you can't really make it out of anything else. Tough to get and expensive. It is definitely cool though and if you buy a lifetime supply of brass, it's not really an issue. A 25-06 with 100gr ttsx will do it all but if you are looking at the vanguard s2 why not a 257 wby? 3600fps with 100gr ttsx and 3850 fps with the 80gr ttsx. Will zap stuff dead and crazy mpbr.

I have a 26" hart on my 240 and it will shoot nosler partitions into 1 moa at 3425 fps. have owned a 25-06 before, and I would not hesitate to do anything with one that i would not do with the other. I believe my 25-06 was easier to load for, and in the end was more accurate with any given bullet weight, and was considerably less finnicky to load for.

However, the 240 is a cool cartridge to load for and it is spectacular on deer and coyotes. I have not shot anything bigger, but would go after a moose in a heart beat. Needless to say, shot placement with either is of the utmost importance, as neither is "overpowered" for bear, elk or moose.

I am on the 6th loading of the original 140 cases I purchased, and have not lost any to split necks, separated bases, or enlarged primer pockets. I do walk the edge on pressure, but so far the brass seems to be loasting well. I will likely anneal before the next loading. That being said, brass is expensive, but is readily available via mailorder from wholesale sports.

I have a 257 WBY Vangaurd in stainless already. I don't really like the Barnes TSX's, I prefer partitions. Lead=Dead

I have owned both, and the 25-06 will far outrun a 240 Wby any day of the week, and do it in any bullet weight you want to use. As well, my Mark V was very heavy and not as accurate as any of my 25s.

If you really want to reach out there, get a 25-06 rechambered to Ackley Improved, and send 100 gr bullets off at 3600 fps. BTDT.

I will take the .240 and any of the VLD bullets that exceed .500 BC at 3300fps.

Can't get excited about a 25 cal AI mini mag that fails to meet the .257 Weatherby. Odd how some guys are unable to pick up on that.:slap:

And if you're referring to the Matrix bullet, that's a static BC value, not a G1. The G1 value comparable to other bullets' BC values would be somewhat lower.

The .25 bullet lineup has a blatantly obvious hole in the high-BC area. A good, 120gr+ A-Max, or a heavier VLD would be more than welcomed.

I'd go for the .240 wby. In a pinch, you can make brass from .30-06.

Plus for varmints, you can get the 55 gr Nosler bullets. Hot loads put them over 3700 fps. I'm not sure if you can get that great of accuracy out of the light bullets, but that option certainly exists.

But you can't walk down to the co-op gas station and get a box of weatherby ammo.

Some people even made 25-06 from 30-06.... in a pinch that is. :p
