243 for long distance?

Shot a coyote with my 6mm rem at 630 yards this winter. Laser ranged and dialed in 8.25 moa on the elevation turret. 87 grain v-max at 3300 fps using rl-19. (no bs ... witnessed) Very accurate and flat. 87's have a .400 bc and 105 a-maxes a .500 bc. I can push the 105's at 3100 using retumbo. Depending on your definition of long range the .243 will hang with just about anything to 1000 yards. 105's work well in 9 twist factory pipes as well. Don't worry about barrel wear....its like worring about tires wearing out on your race car. Wearing out a barrel is a good thing. It represents a significant amount of practice and learning and those who wear out barrels should be proud of their achievement. Just make sure bullets wear it out not your cleaning rod/technique.

Fdgr you are still in the looking stage,shooting at stage is next, got real close is next,buddy got one stage,then the missed another stage and finally got one stage is next. Just got to live that long.
 
Your barrel usually "goes" when the rifling just ahead of the chamber wears away leaving excessive freebore for the bullets to travel before engaging the lands. Bullets that have to jump way out to the rifling tend to shoot poorly (in most cases). This can be cured by setting the barrel back and having the chamber recut or simply rebarrelling. "Throat erosion" ,as it is often refered to, is the result of heat and friction from bullets and powder charges passing through the throat. The rest of the barrel wears out as well but to a much lesser extent and at a much slower rate then the throat. 243's are overbore meaning that a subsantially greater amount of powder is used in relation to the bore size in comparison with less powerful cartridges like the 6mmbr. Typically overbore cartridges tend to have accelerated throat erosion.

you for sure that using 88 gr Bergers I can get out to 500 yards with 7.25 minutes. I have yet to play around with some 95 and 105 Bergers.

It is my COYOTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE poison so it does not see alot of action.

I does launch 55gr Sierra BK's out to 500 with great accuracy as well.

I still prefer to shoot the 6BR.
