Looking at building a rifle on a Remington 700 action. For accuracy I cant decide if I should go for a 243 or the 22-250. I want to shoot gophers and targets out to 300+ meters. I know the 243 can be quite accurate as its based on the 308 necked down. When the match loads were developed, my 308 had amazing accuracy (.364" at 100) with aperture sights. Built the same way with same materials should I get the same type of accuracy? OR should I be looking at one of the bench rest cartridges...... A 223 would be nice but the bolt face is to big.

If you want to build your gun go with a 22-243. I believe RCBS makes dies for this cartridge. I know a guy who has one and loves it. He has experimented with different rates of twist. I believe he is shooting a 1-10 right know with very good accuracy from 60-65 grain bullets. A 1-8 would be better for heavier bullets. He has taken Coyotes beyond 800 yards. Check out http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w22243m.html for some more info.

I like my 22-250.

With the exception of a Shilen trigger at 1 1/2 & a bedding job the 700 is basically a factory rifle. A 6.5x20x40mm Leupold sits on top of it.

Here is what it shoots like.

Your friend must love buying barrels. That cartridge is so overbore it would be good for maybe 800 accurate rounds tops. It is in reality a 223-08.

Im shooting a .22-250AI by ATRS

on a barnard action. I went with 1-12 twist pacnor, 26" long. Shoots 52 berger match pills at 4075fps. 41gr of r-15 in norma brass, this is my go to load..... I went with the lighter bullet at faster speeds so its flatter shooting.

To each their own. Lots of people have .50 BMG's and at 15 bucks a pop out of the 50 I could afford to put more barrels on a 22-243 and use it in the field. Like a said before to each their own. Who am i to judge? If you want to let someone know the down side of a rifle do just that. Don’t make yourself out to be an a$$.

A barrel dealer, warning people about a cartridge that will burn through barrels quickly. Doesn't sound like an ass to me.

I would suggest the 22/250, 22 and 6BR for a standard bolt face. PD's usually means alot of shooting and large case is going to heat the barrel too fast for my liking. The 22/250 case will cost 1/2 that of the BR's and if you load them to reasonable levels, last for the life of the barrel.

You can now take the 22/250 from the 22 Hornet to a full throttle zapper. Very versatile. I would suggest 8 twist so you can run pretty much every viable bullet out there. 80gr Amax or Berger at 3000fps will not stress this case one bit and the LR ballistics are very very entertaining.

Hey pal, if you want to spend money on a gun that eats barrels and has no significant ballistic advantage over a 220 swift or 22-250, fly right at it. I'm warning the poor unsuspecting fellow to whom you imarted such obtuse advice to save his money.

In addition to selling barrels, I am also a very active long distance competitive shooter and varmint hunter, and I work very hard to try and mentor new shooters. Not only have I learned a few (hard) lessons along the way, I have learned to listen to people who know what they're talking about.

I may be an "a$$" but anyone that would come out and suggest an obscenely overbore and obscure wildcat to a guy that wants either a 243 or a 22-250 (both factory cartridges with a good selection of commercial offerings) needs to work a little harder to earn some credibility, particularly when the recommendation is based on a second-hand observation.

From reading the original post and seeing he wants to build a rifle in ether 22-250 or 243 I gave him another option. I also supplied him with a link to check it out for himself. I do not expect anybody to take my word as gospel. To be honest I am thinking my next rifle is going to be a 22-243, even if it is a barrel burner. And my second hand observation comes from a guy with numerous rifle and IPSC trophies behind the desk where he stocks his lilja rifled barrels (just like someone else on this thread). I do not have a problem with criticism and different ways of thinking. But please keep it civil.

358 asked a simple question - which is more accurate .22-250 / .243, why not just answer the question instead of going off in all directions. JMHO but I think, once a good load is found for either the "accuracy" differences would be negligible if any at all. The difference is the .22-250 is basically a varmint calibre while the .243 could be used on larger game depending on load. --- John303.
