I have an old savage 99 (1951 frame) that has been rebarreled to a 243 before I bought it.
How much work is it to re-barrel it to 7mm08?

Perhaps your best option if you want to turn that rifle into a 7mm-08 would be to get it rebored. Ron Smith might still be doing a few, he makes, and rebores top quality barrels. I don't have his contact info off the top of my head, but I bet he'll show up on a search, or I can there you go.

I would just do a little checking on overall length. Savages tend to be a little crowded, and will probably limit you to 140/150 grainers, or deep-seating. Great choice of cartridge AND gun, BTW!

It hasn't been mentioned but I believe you will need work on the rotary mag spool also.

I just loader the rotary mag. with 308s and it seemed to work fine, but I can see where O.A.L. would have to be watched.

I have seen Savages rebarreled and the spools take the cartridges just fine..................but they won't feed fine!
The rotary spools are caliber specific meaning that the 243 spool is not exactly the same as the 308 spool even though both are the same case, the cutout has the diameter of the neck machined out of it and the larger cases will not properly strip from the spool, check the fit again. Hard to say if it will work since you don't know what the original caliber was. Warning, if you need a new spool for the proper caliber you could be facing big bucks!
