243 twist rate???

I've been wanting to have a gun put together for over a year now and it's been on the back burner due to other priorities, I want to know what twist rate I need to get, I'm planing on hunting with this gun and MAYBE shooting out to 500 yards, and also what bullet weight I should shoot out of different twist rates?, is there a "starters chart some where " to point me in the right direction.

9 or 10 twist basically will handle up to 100 grain bullets. The longer VLD bullets require a quicker twist. Factory hunting ammunition will work in the standard 10 twist.
 
1-10 seems most common with factory guns

100+ grain target length bullets generally work better with a 1-8

77g Scenars and shorter generally group the best with a 1-13, or 1-14 twist.
 
Yes, you can always shoot lighter bullets just fine... but you need a shorter throat for shorter bullets for best accuracy over time...
 
I would go with the faster twist.

I have a Wby VGII 243 with the 1:10 twist.

It shoots well under 1" with 80 to 87 grain bullets.

It's not bad with soft point 100's either.

But, particularly when it's cold out I start getting some keyholing with 90 grain Scirocco's, which are long for the caliber, unless I really max out the powder charge.

A 1:9 or faster twist would be more to my liking, but the gun does shoot wicked accurate within it's ammo limitations.
 
Yes, the Remingtons will stabilize 100 and 105 gn VLDs out to 500 mtrs, I shoot several of them. For the 115 VLDs you need a 1-8 twist. I highly recommend the factory Remington rifles because of there slightly quicker twist and usually outstanding accuracy with bullets up to the 105s.........Most other factory rifles which have the 1-10 twist, start to have stability problems with 100 gn SPBT and VLDs and 105s

However I have found that the greatest velocity per bullet grain weight can be achieved with 80 gn bullets in the 243, maxed out loads put the 80 gn only about 50-75 fps less than a 75 gn max load but 200 fps ahead of a max 90 gn load..........it's kinda odd but I have noticed this in every 243 I have owned........which is about 10 so far, and 5 at the present moment.

This is great info guys, I have a new take off from a Remington that may try out first to see how if works for me, I also pm'd a guy on the EE who had a few blankes
