I plan to use my new .243 for hunting yotes this winter am intereted in your guys experiece with the new light bullets with their incredible speed...Kind of confused though....

In the Wholseale sports the Barnes line Varmin-A-Tor bullets .243 58 grain
Whereas Russels shows Barnes Burner Varmint bullets but only in .22 cal.. No mention of the Vermin-A-Tor...

Now onto Hornady, Wholesale has nothing listed in that section..

Russells shows .243-58 Grain AMax Moly

However for 6mm, the show 6mm by 58 grain in the Vmax...

Is there really a difference between the .243 and 6mm?? I was told there isn't.

Whats the difference between an A-Max and V-Max ??? Honday website did not clear it up.....

And last question, has anyone had experience actually shooting yotes with any of these rounds and what they think of them?????

No difference.

I have been tinkering with the 58g v-max and it shoots well but I tend to see a lot of foxes and i'm sure that @3900fps the v-max would be far to explosive on them. I think a 70-75g heavier constructed bullet would be a good coyote killer and hopefully just poke a hole through a fox. (assuming i dont hit big bones.)

I think the A-max is a target bullet not intended for hunting.

At the Hornady website, if you click on the Customer Service and then the Free Catalogue link, you can download the whole thing or just the section you want. A little more detail then the bullet section on the web.

As gth stated, the A-Max bullets are indeed Match bullets.

Vmax is a varmint bullet, Amax is match target bullet, and only available in 105 gr 243/6mm (same ####).

you'll want to try some Hornady Vmax or Nosler ballistic tips between 55 and 87 gr

as for powder, Varget, RL15, IMR 4064, 4350 all should work fine

I also got a 243 recently and in December I will be taking it out to prepare for some long range 'yoting this winter. Had it out shooting in August, and was torching off 58 gr vmax @ 3800 fps, and 70 gr Nosler BT @ 3500 fps. Will do more tweaking in the winter.

a-max is suitable as a varmint bullet. They expand *very* rapidly, and are not really suitable for big game, though Hornady says they will work for antelope/deer/CXP2-calss game. Personally I wouldn't

I had a .243 for coyotes and a 75 gr. V-Max behind Varget worked very well. I found it hard to get decent groups with my .243 when I went with bullets below 75 grs.
I would shoot the bullet which gives you the accuracy vs the bullets velocity.
.243 is an awsome long range varmint round and really miss the one I sold.

I bought a lightly used Sako m75 SS 243 in May and will use this winter for wolves & coyotes. I got 55 & 95 grain Ballistic Silvertips, and 65grain moly VMAXs. Cant wait to reload for it. This topic will help me too. I bought the Hodgdons Varmint Experimental Pack of powders, plus I have a few others.

where did you find that? :D
I bought it at P & D Enterprises near the end of June. Comes with 4 different powders containers - each 1/4 lbs. I think this is a great way to try a few different powders w/o buying 1# containers. Cant remember off hand the 4 powders. Varget, H380, H4350, and H414, H4895-I Cant remember-I'll post it later.

I have a .243 and I love it. Same as the 6mm when it comes to the projectile.

I use the 65 grain V-max over Varget and consistantly get 3/4 inch groups or smaller.

When it comes to the availabilty of componets... just shop around. Everyone has 6mm.
