I just got off the phone and finished placing an order for a Rem 700 sps varmint chambered in .243, It has a 26" heavy barrel with a 1:9 1/8 twist.

any load recommendations would be highly appreciated.

cheers!

for Varmints, my .243 likes 45 grains of H-414, Win brass, WLR primer, and a Barnes "Varminator" 72grain HP.
Bullet is seated .015 off the lands.
shows at 3295 fps over my chrono (22" barrel), and averages under 1" groups.

This load is pretty close to max, so work up to it carefully.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention............Barnes Varminators are discontinued. Call Wholesale Sports, they might have some left.

55 Nosler over a 'stout' charge of Varget. Forget about seating it anywhere near the lands, though accuracy is still good if you keep your brass fireformed to the chamber and conentric (i.e. use neck dies: benchrest bushing style or Lee Collet)

WinLR
Barnes TSX 85 grain seated .05 off the lands
48.0 grains of IMR 4831 (slightly compressed load) gives me 3200 fps from a 20" barrel, should give you 3300 from a 26" bbl, possibly even faster

75 gr hornady v-max
42 gr. Rel. 15
lapua brass
Fed. 210 m primer
Just touching lands
3550 fps out of a 24" 1: 12 twist Gailard barrel
Yes, this is a hot load, but out of my L57 Sako action they group within 3/8"
Next load:
107 gr sierra match king
42.5gr Rel. 22
Fed. 210m primer
.010 into lands
3000 fps out of a 1:8 twist Gailard barrel
Yet another hot load but grouped under 2" at 500 yds.

Note. I use fed. primers because they are soft and tend to show signs of
excessive pressure.
In your own rifle you must work up to a given load and be watching for
all signs of presure.
Have fun

42 grains of RL15 behind a 70 grain Nosler BT will do 3500 fps out of my 24" tube 700. Very accurate too

if I had to use my 243 on deer I would try the 85 grain Barnes TSX over enough H4350 to do 3200 fps or so

for paper punching in a 1:9 twist you should try a Sierra or Hornady 85 grain HPBT

"...what bullet weight..." 85 grains and up. For punching paper, there's a 107 grain Matchking and a 105 grain A-Max. Match grade bullets are no good for hunting anything but varmints. Fortunately, there are lots of good hunting bullets available and there's no reason not to use heavy for calibre bullets for varmints. The Speer 105 grain SP's I use practically turn a ground hog inside out.
IMR4350, IMR4064, IMR4320 are good powders for heavy 6mm bullets.
Somebody is making a 115 grain bullet too. It's not one of the major bullet guys though.

You should have at least 2 or 3 different reloading manuals also becouse they will not always show the same loads. Good one's will be Hornady, Sierra
and Nosler. With your rifling twist you can shoot a wide range of bullets. I recomend trying them all. It may take you a couple of years but then that's what it's all about. Work up to max loads and watch your presure signs.
Have fun.

a 1:9 twist 243 will most likely be limted to 100 grain bullets with the exception of the Speer 105 grain spitzer. The 105 Amax, 107 Sierra, and heavier will probably too long to stabilize unless you have a 1:8 or faster twist

Had great luck with 2 loads with my 700, 40g or varget with a 75 gr vmax = 3440 fps and the most accurate was 42 g of Imr 4831 with a sierra GMK at 3000 fps shoots very well!

I'm using a 65 grain Vmax over 40gr of Varget. Federal Primers and whatever brass I can find.

I really like this load and I don't think I'll be changing it any time soon.

Still trying to find something for the 95grain SST. Can't wait till spring.
