.243Win - Tell me about it!!!

My sister beaned her first deer with a Browning BLR 81 in .243 at
just over 400 yds. off the hood of her hubby's truck.
I've always had a soft spot for 6mm cartidges as well as 6.5's.
With the powders and bullets available today, theres no reason for
needing anything outside these cartridges for any game in North America.

But being gun nutz, we natually got to have lots of variety in our
gun safes. From air rifles to elephant guns and beyond, we just
gotta have'em. That's the best part.;)

better not let Jack see that! ;)

I have a .243 already, but it is mainly used for coyotes.

Just bought a 6.5x55 for deer, and black bears.

If you already have a .223 I would look for something else. You won't see a whole lot of difference with coyotes.

I would think any deer hunting would be in areas where these calibre restrictions don't apply, no? Regardless .243 is pretty much the minimum for deer, and for black bear it is questionable. Larger entry and exit wholes are important with black bears.

Why not buy a dedicated deer/bear gun, as you already have the perfect coyote gun?

"Until The Angels Fall" I ran into the same situation as you and opted for a heavy barrel 243 and it was the best decision I have made. I have a rifle I can pull out of the safe and do everything I want. I wanted something I could target shoot and hunt deer and coyote.

I'm sure when you get it at tune it in to shoot every grain you want you will not regret it.

I have owned 3 243's over the years but they just don't do it for me the have the accuracy to reach out there but just didn't seem to have the impact at 350-400yrds that I was looking for but my first gun was a 303 and I've always shot 30cals and up I love my 223 for yotes and gophers but I just found the 243 lacking on mule deer .I would preffer a 257 weatherby or 7mm if I had to keep it under 30cal. I would go as big as I could but each to his own.

Simply put, 243 Win is the best varmint/deer combo cartridge.
As a long range varmint cartridge it is only bested by 25-06 at the cost of much higher recoil and muzzle blast.
As a deer cartride, it is comparable to the classic 257 Roberts if premium bullets are used and is the best modern small caliber hunting cartridge.

A great combo cartridge if you're looking for a very low recoil cartridge.
Just remember that it's not 6.5x55 Swedish or 270 Win!
