What is the optimum barrel length for these calibers? Both my bolt 2506 & .280 rem have 22" barrels and are very accurate using factory ammo! Lots of rifles come in these calibers with 24" or 26" barrels and now I see some single shots coming with 28" barrels. Im just trying to figure out the advantage of a 28" barrel, accuracy, muzzel velosity, sight alignment ( open sights), balance?

longer barrel gives more 'free' velocity but the negative is it wont be a very handy gun in the bush
Optimum for a balance of packing and speed would be 24". If I was to build a custom 25-06 or 280 it would probably wear a 25" barrel just because those cartridges are good for open country hunting and the extra length/speed would come in handy.
