Well it's that time. My gun won't group under an 1.5" now with proven loads. Even the factory loads it shot well are dismal now. It still shoots the 75 gr Vmax under an inch for some reason but it's time to re barrel
I'm thinking 26" blued but can't decide on contour. I'm going to get a Boyds stock as well
What Is The going trend nowadays for thickness I don't want another sporter

Is cutting the barrel back a thread and rechambering an option? It seems that the jump the VMax has to the rifling agrees with it, so the eroded length of the throat isn't that bad.

Okay, I get it, you've made up your mind and are committed to a new barrel. I think 26" is a good length for the cartridge, but the contour you choose should be consistent with the way you intend to use the rifle. A varmint rifle or target rifle favors a full diameter straight tube, to deal with the heat of rapid firing, but a #2 contour is more fitting to a sheep rifle used in difficult country. Since you're located in southern Ontario, you could be shooting in a variety of terrains from open farmland, to heavy timber, so I'll take the cowards way out and say you're best served with a #3 contour, which provides a moderate weight barrel for a small bore, and is much stiffer than an ultralight contour. If you follow this advice you might not thank me if you're dragging that thing around the top of Lake Superior where the country is as rugged as anything the western mountains have to offer. But if an 8 pound hunting rifle, or a walking varminter, fits your needs, you should be good to go, depending on the weight of your Boyds stock.

If you aren't interested in a sporter contour, a barrel that gives you between .75" and .80" at the muzzle saves some weight over a straight tube, so an equivalent to a Krieger #7 light target, which has a .75" muzzle diameter, is consistent with the small bore for a man portable rifle. The estimated weight is 5.5 pounds.

My custom 25-06 has a 26.5" Gaillard barrel with a #4 contour. I wanted a heavier contour similar to the ones you find on the older Sako sporters. As Boomer says, you'll want to tailor your build to your terrain. I built mine when I lived on the Chilcotin Plateau in BC. Now I'm in the thick and tanglies of the East Coast and the rifle is a lot less fun.

Copper fouling may be a problem.
How many rounds has this barrel seen?
Will your rounds seat to the lands? My 22-250 was to the point a 60 grain bullet would not longer touch the lands. A 75 grain bullet is short and you may get a better indicator trying a longer bullet . . . any 120's?

The rifle is a stock Stevens 200 with 22" barrel now. I use it for coyotes and crows in SW Ontario and wolf up north. Weight really isn't an issue. I use a sling when carrying it now.
I doubt I'll ever hunt the mountains for sheep or goats. Like to but financial barriers prevent it I'd assume so it'll be used in mostly open farm land and the edges of clear cuts and Beaver ponds where I might be able to call in a wolf or coyote.
There's been approximately 1800 rounds fired thru it.
My varmint loads are fairly light at 75 gr Vmax over 49 grs of varget for 3550 fps and a slightly warm for my rifle 117 gr interlock at 3150 fps over 51 grs imr 4831. It's 2 grs below book max but flattens Winchester primers a bit
I never thought of cutting threads and rechambering. How would that compare cost wise to a new barrel?

I've loaded the interlocks out further and it helped a bit but they're on the very edge of the cannalure now any further out and I'd be crimping on the jacket

I'm not sure just what the contour on mine would be called, its .625 " @ the muzzle by 25.5 " long, a Douglas premium air guage barrel..
