I have a stupid question....LOL Will any long action do to build a 25-06? Do I need to change the bolt face? I guess a 30-06 would be the best donor. I am going to buy a Stevens 200 and try to build a really nice 25 out of it.

Last summer I bought a Stevens 200 in 223 from a local fella and he did all the work on it. New trigger, stock. Now I would like to attempt my own build.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Rick.

The .25-06 has the same bolt face as a .30-06. You could go with the .30-06 or the .270, and you will be fine (the .25-06, 6.5-06, .270, .280, .338-06 and .35 Whelen all come from the .30-06).

Just buy a savage 111 and save yourself some time and money. They have a few options in 25/06. The 111 BTH is nice and also the 111 lightwieght hunter. You would get the accutrigger and not have to do a barrel swap. Just a thaught. Happy to see you are going the right direction choosing the Savage/Stevens action :stirthepot2: Cant say the same about your calibre choice :p

So what caliber do you suggest? I thought 25-06 would be a great deer round. Also heard really good things on accuracy. I should add that I haven't started reloading yet so factory ammo is my only choice for now.

25-06

25-06 is a great round, how much money are you putting into your Stevens project. There are some fine factory pieces that don't cost all that much relative to a build. I had a Tikka that was a fantastic shooter in 25-06. FS

Stevens or Marlin Rifle $300 -$400
Prefit barrel $350 - $400
Boyd laminate stock $120
Trigger $100 -$150
Rings/basses $100
Scope $$$$$$$$$$$$

Cost of build $1000 - $1200
Did it your self "PRICELESS"

Many have and many will, tell you the 25/06 is the best. Personally I wouldnt have one.......oh ya, I do have one. It has not saw the light of day for about 5 years. Its a beautiful Browning A-bolt medallion, love the gun but a few years of hunting with it made me dislike the cartridge. I like a bullet to still have some steam behind it for those times when all you get is a long shot on a big buck you have been working for. As far as accuracy...Its the rifle, the time and precision put into working up loads and loading them and the abillity of the shooter to place shots with his rifle. So dont believe the "accurate cartridge" info.

I just turned a centerfeed stevens 200 into a 25-06Ackley. The centerfeed feeds those sharp shouldered ackley shells in so smoothly you WILL check to see if a shell even slid into the chamber a few times!

Boyds lightweight thumbhole stock and rifle basix "cheapie" trigger (I didn't want to go lower than 1.5 pounds with it - much less under 14ounces - I am shooting .5" 5 shot groups (cooling at least 10 minutes between each shot) rather consistently at 200 yards...6-24x elite 4200 scope on top of it though.

I don't have a pile of money into the build - but it sure is nice!!

I went ackley improved opposed to 25-06 because regular 25-06 cases grow like a bugger every firing - I HATE case trimming! The ackley only gained me about 150fps over regular 25-06 with 115gr bullets - but case stretch is VERY minimal!

Doing it yourself and getting good results with a stevens action as a base for the build is certainly reasonable to expect!

I don`t care for the 25-06 either. Had one for a few years and just couldn`t warm up to it, 30-06 is great and may build a 6.5-06 but there is something about the 25 caliber that turns me off. Good thing there are a lot of choices for us nutz, be real sad if we all had to shoot the same thing.

I'm not much of a believer in this bit about calibre A being more accurate than calibre B.
When Winchester brought out the .308 as a commercial cartridge, it soon gained a great reputation with the bench rest shooters. Thus, the gun writer types who had gone into being firearm "experts," because it paid more than writing about decorating houses, filled their glossy pages with tripe about the fantastic accuracy of the 308 Winchester.
Then, one of the major bench rest shooters of the day put them straight. He said the 308 had no more potential accuracy than a 30-06, or some other cartridges. He said the reason it was popular on the bench rest circuit for 30 calibre, was because it recoiled less than did the 30-06.
I think that much of the great accuracy we hear of for such cartridges as the 6.5 x (something or other) the 257 and the 25-06, is due to lighter recoil, as compared to other hunting calibres.
And recoil does affect accuracy, whether the big magnum guys like to admit it, or not.
Long ago, the British military were great experimenters. Among their many tests on small arms was one regarding the .303. They discoverd that a 10 1/2 pound Lee Enfield, when shot by an average shooter from the prone position, moved back one tenth of an inch, before the bullet got out the barrel!
So what would that do to some shooter trying for a one hole group? Even with a heavy, for sporting rifles and fairly light recoiling cartridge.
