Got a 25-06 on the way and just wondering what ammo you guys/gals have been using for coyotes? The area's I hunt range from up close and personal to as far as you can see farm fields.

Not even sure what the local gun store has for ammo. I do handload but don't have dies and brass for the 25-06 so will have to make do with some factory ammo for now.

I don't own one, but one of my coyote hunting partners does, and what he did was simply settle for the most accurate load we could find for it. A .25-06 has lots more than you really need for coyotes, so any bullet that shoots well will do the job just as far as you can place it properly. Just go for accuracy, and go hunting.

Too heavy for yotes IMO..Extreme damage...223 Win is about as perfect as one can get for a youe rifle..

I agree wholeheartedly, but I can't get a Browning BAR in 223 and was really looking for a BAR Short Trac in 243win, but this 25-06 came along, so here I am!

Just hate to turn down a good BAR when I get a chance. Now if I could just find a nice one in 280rem!;)

I used to use Winchester Supreme 85gr. Ballistic Silvertips, however I can't find any local stores that carry it anymore, so I started using the cheap Super X 90gr. hollow points, however I can't find anymore of that either, so I guess Rral22 is right, find a load that shoots and use it.

My gun loves 90gr cxp1 winchester grey box. Works great if you don't hit bone. If you do its ok just hang a picture in the hole in the hide. Almost any chest shot kills instantly when you whack em with a 2506. I have some 75gr vmax I want to load up shortly

If you decide against the BAR 25-06, throw a dog a bone bud...I got a spot in the safe saved for such a beast. Right beside;)

i shot a coyote with a 75 grain vmax , blew a big hole in the hide . i will try the speer 120 grain , ive heard of a few guys who have shot them with this bullet say minimum pelt damage .

I've only hit one coyote with a 75gr V-Max at 25-06 velocities. Admittedly, not the most perfect placement.

As others have pointed out, the 25-06 is not a fur friendly caliber unless you reload for it. .25 cal varmint bullets are available that will work much better than commercial ammo. Commercial ammo for the 25-06 will be loaded with expanding bullets that will rip right through both sides of your coyote! If you are NOT interested in saving the hides, just choose a factory load that shoots best in your rifle.

Try the 100 grain soft point loads by PPU

I bought a 2506 this fall and they threw in a couple of boxes for sighting in the rifle. They grouped about 1.5 MOA and I was very suprised how little damage I got on the deer and coyotes I shot.

When I finally did load up some ammo I found my handloads had some pretty destructive down range performance compared to the PPU stuff

sorry maybe I worded that a little strong. Yes there are better calibers for it but my point stays the same

I will concur having seen the results from both cartridges. It is all about bullet construction and speed (or distance from target if you like).

I have seen 25-06 pin holes and a .223 open them up like a can opener......and vice versa

.223 is good coyote gun but verboten for deer in many jurisdictions. 25-06 better for big Western yodel dogs, wolves, and other preds.

If you are wanting a yote gun that you can shoot rodents with then use a .223

A do-it-all rig could be any of the .25's or a 6mms

my 2 cents.
