I am looking at my options for a 25-06 and want a gun in stainless/synthetic/detachable mag and am having trouble. I can't seem to find a Remington that has a detachable mag. The BDL used to have a 25-06 SS DM model but is now discontinued (unless you know of a shop that may have one). Other than Remington there is Tikka and Ruger and i really don’t want a Savage. I would like to keep the purchase at $800 or less. What do you guys think? What gun would you purchase?

ruger arent DM, they are Hinged floorplate only

you could look for a Browning Abolt stainless stalker or wait for this summer to check out the Xbolt SS

tikka is in your price range with a stainless DM

its not so bad:

i can live with a bit of euro styling. i hate their obsession with gold triggers though. i dont like 'bling' on my guns.

pitpenz83 - do you really need a DM? you can get a much better gun under $800 if you skip the DM. like a Ruger Hawkeye, for example :)
DMs are overrated.

That is an idea i am thinking about. My dealer is trying to push me towards the Remington SPS stainless. I am seriously considering it. All i am looking for is the most accurate, best bang for the buck, (prefered DM but not a must), long lasting rifle.

Why not look around and find an 700 BDL in 25-06 and then get the conversion kit frim Cabelas. The Kwik Clip Model 700 Clip Conversion Kit It would be the easy wasy to do it and may save you some money

I looked at that already. I have the new Russells catalogue and the conversion is $140. I don't think it is worth it.

as much as i dislike them, for a stainless/synthetic rifle with a detachable mag in that caliber (.25-06) Tikka seems the logical choice. youll have a difficult time finding any other production rifle meeting those criteria. id normally recommend a Ruger, but i cant find one in .25-06. im even having a hard time finding a stainless/synthetic Savage in .25-06.
the fact that they just dropped the price on Tikkas by $100 makes them even more appealing. as much as i hate to say it, given your criteria the Tikka T3 is the logical choice.

alternately, if you want a better rifle look at the Ruger Hawkeyes. controlled feed Mauser 98 inspired design with a much better bolt/extractor, and include what is IMO the best mainstream scope mounting system on the market (integrated base/QR ringmounts). theyll save you at least $100 on your rings/bases... so at $644 the Ruger Hawkeye is a great deal. they dont come in .25-06 -- however they do come in .243 and .270 so it depends on how flexible your cartridge choice is. SIR mailorder has them and they are good to deal with.

25-06

I want to stay with the 25-06 because it bridges the gap between the rifles i already own. I am really leaning towards the Tikka now because of the detachable magazine and i have heard stories that the Remington likes to rust.

go with the tikka. i bought one in 25 06 for my daughter to hunt with. light and easy handling. the stailess is very durable even if you don't wipe it down in bad weather.

I just saw a post somewhere in one of these forums that said Wholesale Sport and SIR have dropped the pricing on the Tikkas by $100. Hmmmmm

i started a thread a couple of months ago about stainless rifles rusting. collective wisdom here:

couple people complaining about their T3s rusting. be sure to read Gatehouse's story.

the .243 is ballistically similar to the .25-06 with more widely available ammo, short action, less recoil. something to consider...

25-06

How can the 25-06 be compared to the .243? Guys are shooing more than deer sized game with the 25-06 (elk, moose). Something you shouldn't even consider with the .243 (at least i wouldn't.)

you said you wanted the .25-06 to 'bridge a gap between rifles you currently own'.
.243 is a proven deer cartridge. if you have something bigger and are choosing to shoot moose with a .25-06 and 90-120gr ammo... well... thats kindof pushing it, no? why not take something more suited for the animal you are hunting.
