Hey all,

I receintly bought a husky in 25-06.

Looking for advice for reloading. What bullets wold be good for small varmits up to larger game?

Good powders?

I'll have to check what the twist of the barrel is when I get it in but what grain of bullet should I expect to go upto?

Shoot a 100 gr bullet with a 4350-4831 speed powder. Mine shoot best at the top end loads.

I'll need to check but I am using a 110grn Accubond for deer, its fantastic.

But not really good for varmints, not exactly fur friendly

I use 100 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip in my 257 Weatherby. For powders, try using the slowest burn-rate you can find out of reloading manuals. As for varmints, there is no such bullet which is fur-friendly for the 25-06............ maybe a FMJ?

I wouldn't be worried about the fur, if I load light bullets it would be for cyotes.

87 gr. bullets are traditionally considered the correct choice for "small varmints" like gophers and such. Very fast, flat shooting and explosive expansion. The one coyote I shot with my .25-06 was with a 100 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip @ 3300 fps, H4350 powder. It put a big hole through, golf ball size at entrance, fist size at exit. Very effective! The .25-06 has enough velocity that 100 gr. standard cup and core bullets tend to blow up and wreck too much meat and penetration might be a bit shallow on larger game. As mentioned previously, you need very slow burning powder for heavier 25-06 bullets, H4831, IMR 7828, RL22 etc. I prefer 120 grain bullets over 100's for deer hunting. I use 120 gr. Nosler Accubonds, Partitions, and Speer Grand Slam bullets for Deer / Antelope size game. The exception to my suggestion, which I personally haven't tried, is all copper bullets. 100 Gr. Barnes TSX would probably be worth a try.

I have used the 100gr TSX on 2 bull moose. Both fell over quickly. Drive it fast. It is very effective.

What would be a good price for 25-06 brass?

Brass is about $1-$1.30/ea new I have picked up supposedly 1F for $0.50/ea. if headstamp doesn’t bother you grab some to neck down.

Good luck, it’s one of my fav calibers.

In all three 25/06's I've had the 117 gr Sierra with IMR 4831 has been great.

I prefer the heavier bullets in mine, 115-120. Have used 87 gr on coyotes and such though. - dan
