Quick question to those of you with some back ground on this cartridge. I've noticed that essentially all data that I can find online and in manuals is for either a 60gr Hornady, 75gr Speer, or 86-87gr cast of SP bullets. My question is, is there any reason why someone couldn't load up some more modern bullets like a 75gr Vmax if you were single loading into a bolt action and weren't worried about mag space? Just seems to leave a lot on the table just using those old school bullet designs.

You can use just about any .257 bullet within reason in SS mode. Use say 86gr data for anything the same weight or lighter..............Harold

We have a 25-20 Husqvarna single shot bolt action rifle that is lots of fun to shoot. Most of my handloads for it use the Hornady 75 gr. Hollow Point bullet and they shoot pretty well out of it for our purposes, very economical to load and shoots like an oversize 22.
I have found that the traditional 25-20 bullets intended for lever action use are pretty scarce, I find the odd box here and there and sometimes on the EE. That is why we decided to try out the Hornady 75 gr., or similar from other manufacturers. I don't have to worry about magazine restrictions with this rifle but it does have a very short throat so my rounds are seated deep to allow ease of chambering.
The biggest issue I have had loading the 25-20 is the case itself, pretty thin and can be damaged easily in the neck area if you are not careful with your handloading technique.
