Gday
been tossin the idea of gettin another lever gun, but soemthing a little easier on the wallet for Ammo an not such a big cal like the 375 i have.
Would like to hear from blokes with this Cal an see what you actually use them for an what other popular rifle cal you would rate it against...

Im thinkin it would b a good walk about rifle to practise open sight shooting for fox an rabbit to hone in on some stalking skills while the deer hunting is quite.

I kind of have a feeling the 25-20 was a old timers varminter an could be somethin similar to that of a 22 hornet?

Anyway cheers for the feed back.

My father has a Winchester 1892 in 25-20. It was his first gun, used it on his first deer although it took a few shots to get the job done. cartridge is legal here for that but really doesen't have enough pop to do the job. Varmits were it's original purpose. Ammo is scarce and expensive here so I got a Lee loader and loaded a bunch of my own.

Gun is light as a feather, report and recoil are almost non existant, touch stronger than a .22 mag but not much. Any distance to shoot and it falls on it's face though. Good round and gun to pretend you are John Wayne!

My 25-20 is getting old and tired, sometime in the future will need a new barrel.
In spite of being a poor choice for Deer it has accounted for several with no problem, but it has excelled at taking Coyotes at reasonable ranges and I still carry it on trips to the cabin in case pests are encountered.
It is and has always been a faithful companion....

Not sure 25-20 and easier on the wallet go together in the same sentence.

If you reload, that would help a lot, but getting brass will still be $$.

Cheapest lever to feed, other than those in some of the pistol cartridges (357, 44 mag, 45 colt, etc.), is likely the good old 30-30.

WL too bad your down under, as a friend has a real nice Win model 65 in 25-20 for sale! I would have bought it but the original owner had it re-blued and the wood refinished, so its just got shooter writen all over it! I like to own, shoot and invest in period correct fire arms, just my thing. I have a Remington model 25 in 25-20 and its a great little shooter, that I wish we could hunt rabbits and partridge with here in NW Ontario. You will have to cast your own lead bullets and scrounge around for cooper plated hunting bullets at gunshows to make it economical to shoot this calibre.goodluck,Dale Z in Canada!

My old M92 Winchester in .25/20 was a wonderful little rifle. Handloaded with 60 Gr. Winchester hollowpoints it was deadly on groundhogs out to 100-125 yds. With 85 gr hard cast lead bullets it was good for rabbits/grouse/squirrels - killed without damaging much meat. I wouldn't have been afraid to shoot a deer at close range with it. It was the fastest lever action I ever owned.
