Just wondering if anyone has used a 25-20 to take a deer? I got a Remington model 25 25-20 from my uncle and he use to use it for deer hunting in the late 30's, and alote of people used a 25-20 at that time too, because it was quite and they could poach deer without having to worry about the C.O's.(no I am not going to poach deer) BTW they had to poach to feed there families to make it throught the depresion. I just kinda thought it would be neat to use the same rifle as my uncle did too hunt with.

I also heard the world record buck, before the Hansen buck, was shot with a 25-20. Is this true?

I have used the 25-20 too shoot beavers, but thats about it.

The 25/20 is a little on the anemic side for deer....86gr slug at 1700fps will kill a deer but margin for error is small...
If you do use it....best to keep ranges 50 yards or less....Tree stand would be your best bet.

I would pick a better suited rifle and leave the 25/20 for rabbits;)

True, I probably wont use it unless I can get something under 50 yards.

I knew a fella(dead now)who popped a pile of deer with a pump 25-20.He was an old fella when I first started hunting.I saw alot of old black&white pix with him,his deer and his lil 25-20.
This old timmer probably shot 15 deer or more his last six hunting seasons he hunted with us before his knees gave up on him.I am pretty sure it was his only rifle.

Wouldnt be my choice but as a youngster I dragged plenty of deer shot with that old 25-20.

I knew an old guy who used a 25-35,and he told me the 25-20 was designed as a ''farm gun''for dispatching hogs and steers

I have the same rifle passed to me by my father, was his cougar gun when working predator control with hounds, not enough gun for deer in my eyes but a fun little rifle for predators.

Rotaxpower : My grandfather shot a moose with a 25-20 in his farm yard near Carlyle.

My grandmother shot a bull moose that was "pestering" the cows in the pasture with a .25 Stevens, but I wouldn't suggest one myself for moose!

Keeping ranges in mind, dropping a deer from a treestand would be ok.
