Found a very interesting mention of the .25-284, a wildcat based on the 284 Winchester. Performance with light and heavy bullets looks very good, indeed.
Since it is based on a short action round, I'm wondering if it could be put to use on a MAS-36 action I got.
I have a very fine Remington heavy Varmint barrel in 25-06 at my disposition and I'm thinking if it could be rechambered in .25-284 then re-threaded to fit on the MAS-36 receiver?
Sure could make a nifty heavy varmint rifle for not a lot of jojobas...

Rembo built one, traded it to me, which I traded to Martinbns

short action Model 700, Bevan King barrel 24.5" long

I got it to shoot 85 gr. @ 3420 fps, 100's @ 3340, and 110s @ 3175 fps, with excellent sub MOA accuracy

its a really neat round, but does nothing a 260 Remington cant do, burning 10-15 grains less powder :) (if I didnt already own a 260, Id still own that 25-284!) :D

hey...what's this?....I think you had the 25-284 first there buddy:D ......:D :p :p

I still have the reamer:D

I think you are right Rembo, he got the 25-284 first. The good news (for me) is tod got nored with it. The calibre is pretty cool, the rifle in question is spooky accurate, even my son can shoot itty bitty groups with it. Three shot one holers are common, although I am still searching for the ever elusive 5 shot one holer. Best I've done is 4/5 measuring .41 from edge to edge with shot three pulled.
FWIW anybody who wants a super accurate rifle, don't be afraid to buy anytying Rembo built.

The .250 Savage (.250-3000) would launch an 87 grain pill at 3000 fps.

If you are going to go the wildcat route, I'd think the .25-08 would be the most sensible. With 100 grain bullets you really can't use much more powder capacity than the .308 case offers.
In fact, the .257 Roberts would probably be the ideal round to do what you want.

Even if it was 400 fps would that justify the cost of a custom reamer and custom dies?

And if he wanted that, he could go with the Ackley Improved.

thats up to him to decide if its worth the cost of custom dies and reamer, not you or I

the 25-284 is one hell of a cartridge

I'm with tod, isn't this the custom rifle forum, wildcat's rule.
Well, it is actually the precision forum, but wildcats rule anyway!!:D

Martin, I think I have a box or two of X bullets in 25 cal, and some Hornadys if you want them.
