not to be a prick .... but why are so many people shooting .22lr rifles at 25yards? I can throw a rock at that distance, I don't get it????

call me a sissy if you want but i have very bad vision and struggle at 25 yards. I had to wear an eye patch as a kid and still suffer from blurred vision and double vision. I enjoy shooting but i know i will never be good at long range shooting.

That 25 yds is an outgrowth of the old indoor target range shooting.

Personally, I'd hesitate before slapping the "Sissy" label on any of the shooting sports. Try telling that to the Olympic shooters who do it at 20 meters.

Any one can hurl stones at 25 yds. Betcha can't put 5 of them into less than 1/4" on centers. Most rifle shooters have trouble pulling that one off with everyday type .22 rifles. It's a bit of work with a rifle that's up to the job as well.

Doc Sharptail

It's fast and easy.
Most handgun ranges have targets setup at 25 yards.
Lots of indoor ranges are 25 yards.
With open sights, 25 yards is a challenge.
It's good enough for preliminary ammo testing without walking your ass off - whats bad at 25 isn't worth shooting at 50.

But all that said, almost all my shooting is done at 50 yards or 40 meters (the shortest steel shooting bunker).

Well, the way I see it it takes a pretty accurate gun and some skill and concentration to put all the bullets in the same hole or a ragged hole at 25 yards. If you can actually do it try moving further out to 40-50 yards or whatever.

My idea of a sissy shooter is someone that brags about their shooting ability over other's and yet won't post their own groups. :p

Because thats the average shot at a grouse. You try and consistently knocking the head off a grouse shooting offhand at 25 yards, and thats no small feat

I did that the other day. Put up a life size grouse target 25 yards away. First shot offhand with my CIL/Anschutz 310 right in the eye. Damn I'm good!!!

Or so I thought. Except the next several shots were all near misses, usually within an inch or two. Not so easy after all!!!

i would call some one with the huble telescope and bipods on their gun a sissy. but why, i like shooting at short and long ranges, with scopes and without.i love shooting at any range, it makes you a better shooter. STOP HATING

What's so sissy about it? Same techniques, same goal...trying to shoot the tightest group you can. You just expect a much smaller group size at 25 than you would at 50 or 100.

was it off hand or from a benchrest ?scope or open sites?
if you are shooting from a bench and with a scope they should all be in 1 hole or just skirting 1 hole :p :D just kidding lol very nice group lol

now to get back on subject....

I suppose Sissy, might be too strong a word. I should have made my opening post a little clearer.... I don't get why I have seen so many people shooting scoped rifles off a bench at 25 yards? If you are shooting off hand (especially if you are shooting with iron sights) @ 25yards that is a respectable distance to practice your marksmanship skills.

thank you wobbles & ken the kanuck for giving me the answer I was looking for "at 25 because most gophers are in that range and closer"

Haha, you missed the dime by half an inch! ;)
Kidding, good shooting.

My .22's are sighted at 50 yards on paper, but the gopher is usually ~25 yards away.

For Pop Cap

I shoot a lot of 22 and at 50 yds, most ammunition will not shoot
good enough to do that consistently. The higher end ones of a good
batch might some times, but not usualy. Every .22 will usualy only
do it with one type and batch of ammo. I've shot thousands of groups
and even at 25 yds, you can't always shoot 1/4" grps.
Look up benchrest details and you will find few of even those rifles
shot by the best can shoot 1/4" every day. Especialy outdoors where
a 10 MPH wind can be a challenge.
I you guys have never seen one, get a USBR target, bull is 1/10".
There are 25 bulls. The scores won't make you very happy. At least
mine sure dont impress me, and I rarily miss eye of gopher.
