I"ve been trying to find a tight group with the hornady 75gr and 100gr projectiles which were the only ones on the shelf at the time. Still have not hit the sweet spot. So I thought I would excel my homwork by putting it out here. Has anyone found a proven receipe for thier 250-3000. I'm using a savage 99EG 50's edtion in 250-3000. I find the RN work best in my 308 99EG. But all I have for 250 are the hornady75 HP and the 100SP. I'm lookiing for a varmit round, but a deer receipe wouldn't be so bad. I have shot deer with factory loads before with the 250. But I'm looking for velocity more than punch right now tyring to get over 3000 FPS tightly. I know I won't do it with the 100gr.
So anything with a 60, 75, 87 grain, would be useful for this project.

You will have a 1-14 twist that usually most will only stabilize 90gr and under bullets well. Mine also put 100gr CIL RN into the same hole .The shortest ogive 100 gr out there is the Speer and I managed 3/4 " 3 shot groups with it .I used 30-31gr of IMR 3031 and a 100gr bullet.The 87 gr will kill deer till the cows come home but best with broadside double lung hits.For the 87 gr 34.5gr IMR 4895 and it all went into one ragged hole.Also 32.5gr of IMR 3031 shot 3/4" groups...For brass I FL size 22-250 and shoot.....Harold

Thanksfor your reply. So your 100g projectile is speer with 3031?
And your 87 is speer as well? What about primers?
 
Yes the Speer is what I use as it is one of the only light .257 bullets to use a bonded core .Especially in 87gr so you don't get core separation on med sized big game like deer.I've cranked some WT + mule deer bucks with those loads that were pushing 300lbs.All with one shot and perfect bullet expansion. I could be a bit of a perfectionist as too accuracy but in all honesty the Hornady 100gr and Sierras both would stay within 1 1/2-2" groups at 100 yards but the Sav 99 will shoot like a BA with tailored loads so I went for accuracy as well as bullet integrity......PS I use mag primers in all my hunting loads, others may not but a lot of gun writers do as well.In sub- zero weather I like a good fire in the hole so to speak..........Hope that helps........Harold.............a 90gr Partition would be the CAT'S A$$ if they made one but the demand is not there.......great cartridge by the way!

I too like the 4895 powder.
I have always had best luck accuracy wise with Sierra 87gn bullets.
I have to admit thou only a couple deer.
From above thread i would certainly try some Speers if I ever ran across some.
 
If I ever came across a Savage 99A in .250 I'd snatch it up as they had the reliable rotary mag and a better 1-10 twist more suitable for the heavier slugs.........I have a Rem 700 Classic in .250 and it gave me my best groups with loads not safe for a 99 three shots into .123" with the 100gr Sierras.Use Hornady dies for case forming from 22-250 brass as they have a more tappered expander than the RCBS dies and you won't lose any cases with collapsed necks etc...........Harold

My experience is the Sav 99s had the 1-14 twist & handle lighter bullets better than heavier ones. Unless your refering to really new ones like from the 1960, they may have a faster twist??
 
250-3000 Loads

I use the Sierra 100 gr SBT in a 1:14" twist bolt rifle. Best results were obtained with H-4895 and W760. If the 222 Rem didn't exist the 250-3000 Savage would be my favorite cartridge.
 
I use Win 760 with 100gr Sierras in my Rem 700 Classic but the loads are too stiff for a sav99.

I have used the .250 quite a bit over the years in a 99A (1-10 twist, 22" barrel). Shot quite a few caribou with old Winchester 87 grain loads. Performance was fantastic with frequent complete penetration. Used some 100 grain Winchester loads on a few caribou and a real nice whitetail a couple years ago. I got the Winchester shells for $2.50 a box in about '96 and still have some! They were mostly 87 grain bullets.

When reloading the .250, I usually loaded 100 Noslers over 3031 to about 2800 fps. Several black bears fell to those loads.

When I get time to experiment a bit more then I will likely try H4895 and Reloader 15 over more 100 grain noslers. I don't keep a pile of powders around anymore so finding good loads with my standard powders is important to me.

That 75 grain Hornady SP should work well out of your EG and turn a coyote inside out at any sensible distance. I know that the one wolf that I shot with an 87 grainer, required quite a bit of sewing! IMR 3031 is an old favorite for light bullet loads in the .250 and might be worth a try.

The old 99s are great rifles however sometimes need little bedding of the fore end. They are also sensitive to how they are supported when shooting from a bench so if you find that you are getting flyers, both are worth experimenting with.
 
Just for reference here is what my old Model 40 with the 14" twist has put me through, love this little rifle but it is a finicky bugger. The goal was to duplicate the Western Cartridge Co's velocity with the 100gr but the ladder method was used to try and fine tune each powder. 100yds.

100gr RP PSP and PRVI PSP, 2.490" CCI200:
H4895@ 33.1gr = 2 1/2"
IMR 3031 @ 31.5gr = 2 1/2"
H414 @ 39.4 = 7/8"
H4831 @ 42gr = 3"

117gr Hornady RN, 2.425" CCI 200
H4895 @ 32.6gr = 3"
IMR 3031 @ 31.5gr = 3 1/2"
H414 @ 38.6gr = 7/8"
H4831 @ 40.6gr = 3"

To ensure the results were no due to operator they were done several times, with a rest between each string. Tests were also tried with a clean barrel, and a dirty one. It always came out the same. Don't have any data for the lighter stuff yet, hopefully this summer. The 117gr RNs are a bit annoying for trying to reach coyotes but they sure do hammer the deer hard. Have gotten five Deer with them so far and it works great.

I got some really tight groups with hornady 75g HP. 4/5 were in an inch. @ 100 yds
another load was 3/5 under 3/4". Both best groups under 2" total. Could of been me for the 1" group, to bad.
Positive results for both groups with the IMR 3031 and Win primer. H4895 not so good.
I will work up a varmit load from here and make sure it consistant, before testing an 87 g bullet.

I also read somewhere the IMR3031 was used in some factory loads at one time, not sure which ones, just FYI.
