Hi, my buddy has a lever Savage from the early 1900's, does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations where he could buy some ammunition?
I have never seen it in a store.

Thanks

Really? .250-3000 is a fairly popular cartridge everywhere I have ever lived, and I regularly see ammo on the shelves of many larger gun stores. It is usually labelled ".250 Savage".

250-3000

Hey there.the 250 savage or 250-3000 is a great caliber. The 100 grain load is the most popular.Winchester and Remington both load this caliber.
The 3000 part was an 87 grain bullet doing 3000fps.Back then it was something special,no other caliber was pushing a hunting bullet at that speed. The 25 calibers are great, you will love yours.
Happy hunting.:)

Actually, the firearm in question is historical, my buddy recieved it from his deceased grandfather in Nova Scotia.
This model 99 was given to his grandfather from "Stout" Del Thomas, a guide in the expedition chronicled by Albert Bigelow Paine in the book The Tent Dwellers.
You can see the wear on one side by the saddle scabbard. The crack in the stock has been repaired and a gunsmith has serviced it.
google the book "The Tent Dwellers", I'm sure those from Nova Scotia are familiar with it, and the author is most famous for being the biographer of Mark Twain.

We'd like to take the ol' girl out and let her bark again.

With the 1-14" twist chances are only 87gr or lighter bullets will give best accuracy.Short ogive 100gr Dominions or handloaded Speer will also shoot.IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 work well in the 99's .Don't hot rod them though..............................Harold

Thanks everyone for the knowledge, this is why I really like CGN, the rifle in question is really old, and I wouldn't want to jam the wrong ammo into a rifle, especially a lever action. I know there are many old .32 rounds, and I am glad it's not as complicated as that.
I went to Canadian Tire today and I have to report they are all out of 250-2800 :)
The young girl in sporting goods gave it the ol' college effort though!!
