250-3000

I am having a 99 takedown from the 1920s rebarrelled to 1/10 gain twist. I looked at buying used etc, etc, etc and with the cost of fitting needed and with no idea if the the used one would work, I just didn't think it worth the chance.

Your choices are spend 3-500 on something that may not shoot or spend 800 on something that will. A 250 that isn't extremely accurate is worthless IMO.

The 300s are more readily availiable and I even considered buying a donor and converting but again why bother when you can just buy a 300 and shoot it for half the cost.

Mine has the older threads so I was very limited to what was availiable. I am going to have a little over $800 invested not including the existing rifle. Crazy perhaps but this rifle is minty and has a lot of family history.

Good luck with your project.

Sounds like the barrels are still available. Will the smith be using a Savage barrel or making one up? Sometimes the old twist rate will shoot 100gr and sometimes they wont. Either way it doesnt really matter all that much as my first 99 is a 308 and shoots quite well.

Pre 1960 actions have different threads than post 1960 actions and that is when the twist rate changed to 1:10. You are pretty much forced to go custom barrel if you want 1:10 in a pre 1960 action. Setting up to reload is much cheaper than a new barrel. Also keep your eye out at gun shows, there still are a lot of 87 grain boxes showing up.

We sent the old barrel right to the maker to get the taper exact. The local smith here will do the fitting etc. I would have prefered to leave it as is but couldn't get the old one to shoot.

I picked up the rifle this evening and it is in lovely shape for a 1955. Aside from a couple of small dings its in perfect cond. Rifling is VERY strong and sharp so will have to load up some 100gr loads and see it if shoots first before I worry too much in the first place. Now to find a set of dies and some 257 boolits. Thanks for the feedback.

Look for round nose or semi-spitzer bullets. A shorter bullet will shoot better in a slow twist.

Well that sounds good. The guy I got this from had something like 14 hits from Ontario types trying to grab it. Fortunately I had already committed and not dickered. I know he could have likely got as much as another 2 hun for it. Mine now and it is nice. Local store here in Van Reliable Gun has several boxes of Win Super X with 100gr so I could try some of that but at $40 a box that covers my dies and some brass already. Thanks for the tip Supercub-had not thought that far into it but sounds right. All good news.

We've had a lot of guys asking for the Lipseys Ruger Full Stock 250 Savage lately. We've been sold out for months. However, FYI, we managed to pick up four more that will be here in mid April. We didn't think there would be more so we didn't keep a waiting list. It will be first come, first serve. :)

I have got a complete range of boolits for this rifle from 75gr to 120gr and am loading all of them up to see how they will shoot. The Lee manual gives hunting and accuracy loads at the bottom of every section so I will use those for test to see if this rifle will shoot everything or not. Managed to get some of 75, 87,90,100,117 and 120 to play with. If the weather holds I will take them out Monday to play. Have a Martini action BSA Model 12 22 with some of the oddest sights on it I have ever seen so got some shooting to do.

Bogie,
FWIW I did get the 117gr Hornady RN to stabilize in my Savage Bolt gun. I can relay the load data if you like.
110 Accubonds are a no go, and 120gr Hornady HPs. Tried them just to see.

Also tore apart all the old factory rounds I have in my collection and recorded the weight and shape of bullets, powder charge, COL etc trying to figure the little beast out.
Haven't finished sorting out the findings but can try to get that up too.

Cheers

FWIW I notice that there is a a lot of difference in the shapes of some of the bullets in the same grain weight-quite a variance in length which will likely have an effect like Supercub was talking about. Will see how much of a difference they make but one is in the 117 or 120gr range and might just work out nice. Then again I might be lucky and they all shoot. I notice that the few rounds I have already shot thru this rifle do not need resizing. The die just slides over so all I am doing is resizing the neck. Length is almost dead on too. Probably indicates my chamber is on the tight side. Feeds and shoots good so far.

Shortest ogive for 1-14 twist barrels are SPEER 87 +100gr ...........Using IMR 3031 34.5gr for the 87gr and 30gr for the 100's both shot under 1/2" at 100 yards......the old Dominion 100gr KKSP RN made one hole..............Harold

I just found out the 120gr leaves a hole the size of a 12ga slug. Probably any of the 100 and down will shoot well. I have loaded several species of 75-100 and they all shoot well. Go for it.

If you can find any old dominion 100gr psp you will have it made, all my savage rifles shoot it very well.Win silver tips just key hole in one of my rifles.Good luck buuba 69

Shot my 250 on the weekend, happy to report the 100gr RP PSPs went inside .750" for three at about 80-90yds. Not bad for a post and crosswire J4 scope!

117gr RNs are an even 2" group so I will keep working with that one.
I am below listed max loads but my primers are flattening right out. The bullets are seated to the cannelure and std primer being used. Argh!

I still have a variety of loads to shoot but had to call it quits. The scope I had on was not centering. Suspect the mounts are too low. Second scope does same thing and is new so taking the rifle into Reliable tomorrow for a looksee.
Then I can go do some load testing with it.
