I'm looking for favourite recipes from all you Whelen shooters of the 250 Grain bullet. I'm planning on reloading with RL15 but I was wondering who has the most potent recipe. I'll be shooting them out of a Remington 700 so the action is strong. Let me know what she can do.

Best regards,

P.S. I'll check them against the manufacturer's recommended maximum loads before blowing myself up so don't worry about the issue of liability.

Slooshark,
I use 59g of RL-15 with a 250g speer hot-cor, in my Rem 7600. This is at the upper end and depending on what book you look at it is above max. I haven't had any extraction, or primer issues. It is consistantly accurate in my rifle and clocks around 2525-2625(-15 to + 20 c)depending on the temp.
As you know what's safe in my rifle may or may not be in yours, always work up. I'm using rem. brass and winchester primers. Your choice of RL-15 is a very good one.

Good luck, Homesteader

RL15 is the best for the Whelen.

My self imposed max is 58 gr with a 250 gr Hornady. Velocity is 2575-2600 fps at 12 feet out of a 23" barrel.

I have loaded to 59.5 gr for about 2625-2650 fps but case life was poor and the moose didn't notice. By partially resizing rather than full-length resizing, I usually get a few more reloads out of each case.

My 35 Whelen(Rem 7600) likes the Hornady 250 gr SP with 60.0gr of RL15, WLRM primer and measured velocity is 2600 to 2650 fps.
The first 3 shots measure about .75" center to center.
I use WW 30-06 cases resized for the 35 Whelen.
For my loads, I partially resize just enough for easy chambering and so far I am getting at least 4 firings per case without any problems.
I stocked up on Nosler 225gr BT and Speer 250gr spitzer SP bullets and want to work up a load using them sometime soon.
Great Moose and Elk load.
I dropped a 5 point Elk this year at 400 yds(measured), the bullet went all the way thru and the Elk simply dropped.
I'm impressed with the performance that the 35 Whelen has to offer both in terms of power and range.
According to Alliant's info, 59.5 gr of RL-15 is the top/max load. See this link:

Good Luck

58 grs of Re 15 with the 250 gr Partition or Speer in my Whelens has proven to be most accurate and goes around 2500 fps or so. The Hornady 250 gr RN allows another grain or two due to less bullet being in the case for the same OAL and a bit more velocity. At Whelen velocities I have found that the Speer is all that is needed, no premium bullet required in my experience.

Good input from all previous contributors above I think.

Mauser 98 is correct I believe - ReL15 rules for getting the most performance for heavier hunting purposes.

JohnnyJ's load (250/60ReL15) is rightup there to the top perfermance levels practically possible with reliable functioning for a pump gun and even close to top for a bolt gun too like your custom 700/35whelen.

A friend here in town (Ev.....) has recently acquired a M7600/35 whelen and has used Boxhead's and Mauser 98's described load (250s with 58ReL15) to achieve very similar velocities of just over 2500fps. He found it worked well. I haven't fired off my newly acquired M7600 yet but soon will - with that load to get me started I'm thinking.

I'm thinking between 58 and 61.5 grains ReL15 behind a 250 in your 700 bolt gun should be about right - as pressure signs dictate. Get a chrony or borrow one or you're beat before you begin to know what is going on velocity wise.

See my "loading" page (link below) to several 250/ReL15 loads I've used in my 700 classic. The 250 gr. loads listed for the 700 classic as it happens are experimental ones and quite a bit over max so do not recommend them (gave only slightly more velocity too).

Happy shootin

PS - too bad but I just missed meeting you several times this past week when you were down here visiting one of our local gun emporiums.

Reloder 15 is hard to beat, but Vihtavuori N150 and N550 are also great powders here. If you are shooting 225's, N540 is a real performer. Regards, Eagleye.
