Acquired a set of RCBS dies and likely looking at a re-barrel on an exiting sporter for hunting. What rifling twist would be suitable for say, 120-140gr bullets? Don't care about the 156-160gr as they are unavailable for the most part as I have a couple 6.5x55's. The original Newton's used a 1-10 which limited it's use. I was thinking 1-8 . There's a little reloading data in Ken Waters Pet Loads. Should be similar to the 6.5x57 or 6.5-06 power wise.A reamer is available locally.

I'd go with one of Ron Smith's gain twists , he will know exactly what twist will work, but it will likely end up around 1:6.5 or 1:7

Slightly less capacity than the 6.5-06. Split the difference between Euro 6.5 Swede and NA 6.5-06 loads and you should be just about spot on. I would use a 1-8 twist, as they are fairly common now days. Its an interesting cartridge, and I always though the rifles were very cool. - dan

Shilen recommends a 9 twist for up to 130 grain bullets and an 8 twist for over 130 grain bullets...
