I love my 257 Roberts. Mine is the Ruger M77 tang safety. I will be starting to develope some loads for it over the winter. I have been shooting Federal 120gr Partition factory rounds through it this last year.

I have had it for 2 hunting seasons and have been able to shoot only one deer with it and I must say I was very pleased with the preformance.

I would like to hear from my 257 Roberts brothers, as to what you have hunted and shot with your "257 Bob".

Enjoy the holidays

Just whitetails. I shot mine with a 120-grain Speer Hot-Cor over H4831SC. Excellent performance.
I'm on my second Bob; the first was a Model 70 Win push-feed, the present one is a Hawkeye. The most accurate bullets I've used in it were the Sierra 100-grain boattail, Hornady 117-grain Interlock (both Spitzer and roundnose) and the 120 Speer. Always used IMR 4831 or H4831 powders.
I found the roundnose Hornady and 44 grains H4831 made a VERY accurate, VERY low-recoil load which would be great for a beginning shooter, and drop deer to 200 yards or so, easy.
My other loads are at +P levels.

I want one for my son when he's old enough to shoot. Got a solid decade for that! But what a little sweetheart. (both my son and the Roberts!) First one I shot totally won me over. Was a Ruger M77 with a 2-7x Redfield on it, and it was fairly accurate and the low recoil really helped me focus on the proper technique instead of worrying about stopping a scope with my eyebrow. Deer/black bear, no problem.

Have had a tang-safety Ruger 77 in .257R longer than any other rifle in my collection -- please, don't make me say how many decades that has been!

My biggest lessons hunting with that rifle?

a) IMR 4350 really is, and always has been, a top performing powder in that cartridge.

b) Nosler 100 grain Ballistic Tips in .25 cal are much too fragile for deer hunting. I say this based on only two experiences, but they were both so awful that I'll never try a third.

c) For deer hunting, one of the best performers I've come across is the Hornady 117 grain BTSP. It holds together extremely well at Bob velocities, and I've never had one fail to exit on the far side of the animal.

I had a Model 70 push feed for many years. I shot a bunch of whitetails, mule deer and one bear with it. Fed it some 100 grain bullets, but mostly Nosler 120 partitions and IMR 4350 for 2800 fps. Deadly combination! Good killing power on medium sized animals.
I had a guy show up in our elk camp with a .257 and 100 gr. Nosler BT's. I suggested he borrow my rifle ( a .35 whelen with 250 gr.) and he was very insulted. Said he killed 2 moose with that combination the year before. I agree with Neo, that 100 gr. Nosler bullet blows up even on coyotes, and is too fragile for most deer hunting. Certainly not an elk bullet, but others may have other opinions!

I have a rem 760, and 7600 in the Bob. I have never fired the 7600, but have taken a few deer with the 760. Works well.

I have an old Remington Model 722 in 257 Roberts. My grandfather killed dozens of mule deer with it. I inherited the Bob a few years ago and haven't used it much yet. But I just started loading 117 graners today and we'll see how that goes. Nice little gun and sure shoots nice at paper.

I have a BLR 81 that likes Hornady 117gr RN with IMR4350 and a Ruger 77 MkII that dotes on 100 gr bullets and IMR4350 or 4831. Great cartridge and a real blast to shoot.
