Just wondering what you guys are able to achieve velocity wise from these 24 inch barrels....

I have not chronied mine as yet, but want to know what to expect,... Using a real ful load of IMR 4831, and a 100 gr TSX projectile. I would guess its over 3500..someplace

I don't own a Vanguard 257 Weatherby......but a couple years ago I shot one over my chrony.....it went 3648 fps with a 100 gr Barnes XLC over a load of Rel22...don't know how much Rel22......the 24" Vanguard barrel is no handicap to the 257 Wtby....

thats moving, I said 3500..but I do expect it to be more myself...The book sayes 3700 with a 26 inch pipe...we have the 24 on the VG, I expect to loose 50-60 or so fps maybe a bit more.

There was an article in one of the magazines about a year ago where Layne Simpson fired two 257's,... a Vanguard and a 26" Mark V....some factory loads were actually faster in the Vangaurd. The average difference in velocity with handloads was not a whole lot.

Of course the Vanguard may simply have had a tighter chamber that produced more pressure.

exactly..sometimes there can be more difference between two barrels of the same length,..chamber dimensions and bore diameters will influence pressure and thereby velocity.

Not all Vanguards can be expected to perform this way...but then not all Mark V's can be expected to perform the same as Simpson's either.

The Vanguard is a great way..read "inexpensive" way to get 257 Weatherby performance without shelling out the bucks for a Mark V...I'm sure the Vanguard is the reason the 257 Wby cartridge is as popular as it has been the last few years.
