.257 Wby

I reload a ton of 257wby because I have 2 buddies as well with 257s . I load everything from varmint to deer to elk loads

Stay away from the ballistic tip / ballistic silvertip ( CT version ) . They can't stand the velocity the 257wby produces

I haven't been able to get the Barnes X , Triple Shock, or the XLCs to shoot that well so i have given up on them for my 257

Best choice for big game is the Swift A-Frames ( 100 Grain and 120 Grain )

Brass : Go with Wby ( made by norma ) or Norma . Haven't had luck with other brands such as Federal. Spend the extra money. the Norma / Wby last suprisingly long

Primers : Fed215M

Powder : I tend to favor RL22 for the 257Wby

For Swift A-Frame 100gr - 72Gr Rl22

For Hornady 117gr SST - 70.5Gr Rl22

For Nosler CT Ballistic Silvertip ( like BT ) - 115Gr - 70.5Gr . Good deer load but its a bit unnerving when typically the largest fragment will be about 20grains ! Even at 200yds I had one completly disintergrate in a antelope. Didn't hit bone . Didn't exit

For Barnes 100Gr XLC-XBT - 73.5 Gr Rl22 . Is struggled to get acceptable accuracy so I gave up

For Hornady 75Gr V-Max ( wicked terminal performance on varmints ! ) -75Gr Rl22

For Hornady 100Gr SP - 72Gr Rl22 . This plain jane bullet holds up suprisingly well . Killed deer just fine.

If you rifle is a Wby you should seat bullets out as long as your magazine will allow. I tend to seat COl - 3.250 - 3.350 which is longer than "standard" COL listed in the load manuals. Don't get too geeked about not crimping because the 257 has a long neck and the bullet is relatively light so they dont' pull out under recoil

If I were to choose one load i would go with the 100gr A-Frames. One shot instant stop on all the deer/antelope . My buddy shot a cow elk last year in the neck and it droped instantly . Impressive for a 100gain bullet

I have been tempted to try some Accubonds ( wish Swift would make a 257 Scirrocco ) but the A-Frames work so well I can't see a reason to change

Velocity at muzzle should be about 3450 -3500 with 72.5Gr Rl22

TRG-42,

Great information. Thanks!
Mine is a Vanguard SS. I was looking at trying the Accubond as a few guys have mentioned it as performing quite well. I only wish Hornady would make some interbonds though.
Was in contact with Ramshot, and they provided me some load data for Magnum.

Bullet weight: 100grains.
Start load: 67.0 grains ( 3100- 3200 ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 75.0grains ( 3400 - 3500 Ft/p/sec).
Bullet weight: 117/120grains.
Start load: 64.0grains ( 2900 - 3000 ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 71.0 grains (3100- 3200ft/p/sec).

I used to use RL22 when I had a .270Wby (also a Vanguard) and got very good performance.

Is the Hornday SST able to handle the high velocity ok? I might worry about it blowing up on impact :p
