With the ridiculous cost of .257 Wby brass it seems to me that it could be
formed from .264 win or 7mm rem. I realize it is a little shorter but would
the reforming not increase the length or would it matter? Wish Federal still
made the nickel plated stuff! Anyone out there done this and is there any
problems or concerns? :runaway:

7mag is the easiest to get so it is used the most.Ending up a little shorter is great , virtually no trimming.I use it for 257,270&7mm weatherby also 308 norma.

Try .300 Winchester brass. You will have to anneal the necks, and probably ream the in side of the necks, but they will be long enough. .300 H&H will work as well (have used them myself).
You can get by without a form die set if you have other die sets that are for smaller bullet dia. magnum cases. That way you can kind of step them down bit by bit. There will be less wrecked cases doing that than just running .300 win brass into a .257 WBY die...
Hope this helps

I had a very large supply of .300 H&H brass for free, and didn't feel like paying the Weatherby price, so...
If you have some time to kill and enjoy such things, it really isn't that bad a job....

I also made some .300 Weatherby brass ( simply fire form ) and used a lot in my plain old .300 H&H...

I have used 7mm Rem Mag to do this for years. Also use 264 Win Mag a few times. Like RR says, it works great and is quick and easy.

I don't remember ever losing a case.

Is there any chance of the chamber eroding where the longer neck should be and then giving hard extraction when wthby brass is used? Or am I worrying for nothing. If throat erosion becomes bad has anyone rechambered for 257 STW?

When I had a 257 wby years ago I reformed some 270 wby
it worked fine for general use but my groups got about a 1/2" bigger
at a 100 yds. went from about .75 to 1.25
Any one looking for brass pm me, if I dig around in the dungeon I should be able to find a few hundred cases of 257 and necked down 270
