Just wondering if this is an adequate gun for deer hunting? The gun is capable of shooting 300 yards plus no problem but does it have enough energy at that range for deer. I have read about guys shooting deer at 4oo +yards with a 257. I have read about people shooting elk with this calliber. personally i would use my 300 win for elk and moose. I like short tracking jobs so if this doesnt have the energy for deer im not interested. If it does its a nice long range varmint/deer gun.

Thanks

I have taken about twenty deer, two pronghorns,a mountain goat and an elk with the 257 wby.It has plenty of energy to kill any deer at 500 yards.

X2 stubblejumper said it all, I have one and it is my favorite cal. for deer size game, I don't hunt anything larger very often but would not be afraid to use it on larger game with the heavier bullets. Mine shoots .5'' groups with a few different loads so it is not that fussy to load for.

It is a great calibier. My hunting partner took a whitetail at 372 yards this year and a elk at 180yards. the deer dropped and the elk ran 30 yards. this with 115gr nosler ballistic tips.

I also considered the 257wby a while back and was directed to an interesting article online called "From mice to moose, the .257 Weatherby Magnum does it all"... I google'd it and the link is below

It's a great read if you have a few minutes to spare...

I think if you plan to reload ... this is a great choice.

Also, perhaps the 6.5x55 Swede?

I am L/H and for the price of an accumark you can build one on a M700 action like I did for the same money with a Mcmillan stock on it, you need to find a used Magnum cal. in a used one. you are going to find it lighter and as accurate or better. Mine shoots 110gr accubonds and 115gr. partitions into .5'' groups. the target says 3300fps, I made a mistake it is 3400fps.

Did it ever occur to you that he'd decided on the rifle, and was just wondering what chambering to go for? Some of us don't like M700s!
The accumark is a good choice, though I'd personally go for the ULW.

I gave him suggestions on a lighter rifle that would shoot as good or better and if he already decide on the heavy accumark that is up to him not you.
