So I've decided to give a 257 Weatherby a whirl. I have handled both Vanguards as well as Mark V's.
The Vanguards come in only 24" barrels where as the Mark V comes in 26" barrels.
It seems to me that this caliber was made for 26" barrels.
Does anyone have any experience with 257 wthby in a vanguard. I'm willing to spend the money on a Mark V but obviously the Vanguards are no slouch in Accuracy and easier on the pocket book.

I would go with the mark V, the extra 2 inches of barrel help to burn all that powder, I currently shoot a markV accumark in a 257wby. I havd a remington 700 in a 257 wby also, it had a 26 inch barrel too.

I'm gonna say Vanguard just because if you don't like it you won't have such a hard time selling it to the poor people on this forum. Or maybe they're not so poor, but definitely cheap! ;)

I have a 257 Vanguard with the Lazerguard stock. Love it! Shoots 115 grain ballistic tips at over 3400 fps with IMR 7828. Not sure how much more velocity the 2 inches would get you.... Maybe 70 fps... I like the fact that my rifle cost me about $900 with a beautiful stock and I don't fell bad about hunting with it. The Vanguard action is excellent and a little lighter than the Mark V. You won't go wrong with either though:)

I would still vote for the Mark V. An excellent action, top shelf IMHO, accuracy should be the same or better, and is has panache!! At least it is a WBY!!

I also have the vanguard lazermark and it will easily push 115 partitions to 3400 and half inch accuracy at 100 yards. If you require a Weatherby quality looking and feeling rile the vanguard lazermark is what I would go with. Also the two stage trigger on the vanguard s2 is the best trigger going IMHO. Can't go wrong with the mark v but other than minor fit and finish improvements I'm not sure what could be improved on in the vanguard. I actually have a composite S2 as well for the not so nice conditions. Both rifles cost less than one Mark v. Something to think about

Getting some great info. Right now I can get a Mark V sporter for $250 more then a vanguard back country.
Is the Lazerguard Vanguard a Cabelas exclusive?

One of the benefits of the mkV action (besides the extra 2") is the action itself. Nothing like a 54deg bolt throw.
But, your trade off is about a lb more weight to hump around.

An a 54 degree bolt throw really provides no significant advantage for a hunting rifle.
