The roller on my example has a slight taper, .304-.298 . I don't know if it is original or not, but it looks old enough to be stock.
When I first acquired the rifle it had some lever droop, flipping the roller end for end solved the problem.

That'll work for a short while but I think you'll find that the brass wears out pretty soon.
The stock one that is in mine is steel. Not sure if it's a harder steel or mild. But it's certainly steel. It's even in diameter from end to end at .281. But it's also a replacement I made along with the new screw for the pivot. Both are from drill rod which I then hardened and tempered to a "spring blue" state for toughness. The fit was enough better than stock that I actually had to slightly stone the lip of the lever where it snaps over center and locks. It's pretty neatly firm a lock now.
With the stock screw I'd not be surprised if .310 were good for a snug camming action. The concern is over how long it lasts. But hey, as long as your camming over center lasts it'll work. If I'm wrong and the brass roller lasts for a long time then you're fine.

Cecil, late answer, my roller is steel. I've never checked it for heat treat and with the minimal use the rifle gets it is not a worry.
BCRider did it up right and put in components better than the original, but your solution was a clever one and you will doubtless monitor its performance. If necessary I'm sure you could make a roller from steel by the same method.
