OK.. so I ordered a barrel in 260 Ackley for my Savage 12 VLP..

Head space gauges are on the way as are a barrel wrench, new recoil lug and new bolt heads.. one controlled feed and one push feed..Just to try the controlled feed.

Any thing else I need to swap over from the 204 to the 260 AI???

Also does anyone have any experience with the VBull conversion and 40 degree shoulders.. how do they feed????

Thanks in advance guys...

You will have to check the AI mags. I know for the 338 lapua to 338 Auckley, the rib that they put in the mag falls right where your new 40 degree shoulder goes so the rounds cannot be mag fed. As long as the shoulder isn't blocked by the rib you should be good to go.

"...a barrel wrench..." That'd be a barrel vise and action wrench.
It definitely will not be mag fed either. The .204 case is only 1.850" long with an OAL of 2.25". The Ackley is nearly an inch or more longer depending on the bullet used.
It'd be less expensive to buy a rifle in .260 Remington and re-chamber.

You need a barrel nut wrench to take the savage barrels off.

As well as a Vise.

I use the above nut wrench, a barrel vice and and action wrench on Savage's...
as simple as everyone says they are...

Before you pull the old barrel off, use a marker and draw a ring around the front of the barrel nut on the barrel and measure the length in the camber and mark it on the new barrel. That way you'll have a good start point for how deep to screw it in.

I'm telling you right now that you will have feeding problems.

Been shooting a 260AI since it was a wildcat 6.5/308 Acklified
(a few years plus). I currently use 6.5/243 Lapua AI TN in both single shot and repeater(AI Mags) and they do allright competitively.
Acklified cases are unreliable to feed in a standard staggered feed ramp but will work with a centre feed mag like the AI's.It may take a wee bit of tuning but has worked VERY well in both Rem 700 and Surgeon Actions.
OAL should get away up to 2.820 and still feed.

I cannot state that there will not be issues with a Savage repeater using AI mags as I've not personally built on the Savage.

Welcome to the world of 6.5's and the Acklified case. It'll run with the best of the 6.5's as long as you do dilligence when reloading.
Redding has dies available (custom) and so does RCBS
There are some good articles on 6BR.com regarding forming and loading.
Terry's Tactical 260AI is a good article.
Have fun as this is an extremely efficient and accurate round.

With the new mag box and follower, a staggered feed Savage will feed the 260AI with a bit of tweaking.

If you want a det mag, the simplest way is to get the new gen Center feed rifles. The mag will allow up to 2.95" OAL and feeds AI's smooth and easy. They now make a VLP with the det mag.

Also, any new gen center feed fixed Stevens can be made to work easily.

So anyone know where to buy onna the new center feed actions in stainless.. Or I might just buy the new LRPV and screw on the new tube.. and sell the stock one...

GRRRRRRR nothing is ever as simple as you first think it should be eh???LMAO

Also who sells action wrenchs for the savage????
