Want to rebarrel a Savage TR action with a 260 barrel.....

This will be my 1st 260. Looking for the reduced recoil, improved ballistics and flat shooting I'm certain the 260 will bring??
It will be an all around tac/varmint/target plinker and I will be handloading for it. Not looking to wring it's neck, hoping to shoot it a lot so a reasonable pressure/affordable/accurate load will be the order.

Looking for twist/length/rifling type/contour suggestions please? I like short rifles so also looking for suggestions on minimum barrel length retaining good performance. 22in?
Sources for a barrel? New take off or aftermarket reasonably priced.

BTW...a new unfired Savage TR 308 24in muzzle threaded heavy barrel is up for grabs if I go 260...

With the Savage factory DBM, the 260 can really shine with the 140gr class bullet. But if looking for less recoil, the 123 to 130gr bullets are very interesting and will go fast and flat to around 600yds.

I can offer prefits or blanks in anything you can dream up. Decide on the final specs and work back to the parts. There really isn't a right or wrong answer. If doing a run and gun type rig, I like a shorter barrel too. My PRS style rifle has a #4 contour 22" barrel in 6XC. Added a muzzle brake and it is light, portable and very nice balance for positional shooting.

Varmint contour is as heavy as I would want to pack around but if doing large volume shooting, the larger barrel can help with heat.

If set on the 260/6.5, 8 twist will do all you could want.

PM or email if you want to pursue further. Been competing with the Savage rifle for over 10 yrs.

Let me know

Jerry

If you look at Berger site they are suggesting 8/1 twist for .264 bullets.

Contour is pretty much your call (weight wise). Light varmint and palma are popular for tac style shooting, some like the heavy stuff like the heavy varmint, m24 and MTU....I was looking for a Med/heavy palma and ended with a good deal on a light varmint @ 22" (.308).

I'm reading on the .260 and I find it's a very interesting cal. Good balistic and good barrel life.

I would want a minimum 22"-24" bbl. Average loss would be less than 25 fps per inch of tube with 130-140gr pills. As for contour, I like the MTU/M24 or Heavy Palma, the bigger the better and I'm sure this wont be for hunting in the woods anyway. You need 1:8" twist. I would take a look at the Broughton 5P & the Schneider 5P rifling.

On my .260 Remington, I have a 22 inch Lilja Match Barrel with a 1 in 8 inch twist in a Heavy Varmint contour. I got in as part of a custom build from ATRS.

I was in the same boat this spring and went with a Benchmark 5R finished at 22.5" in a Rem varmint contour. Also went with the Benchmark slab brake, I know a 260 doesn't need a brake but I'm sighting my own shots out to 1500m!

This barrel has been awesome, period. I would not hesitate to do another Benchmark. I brought the rifle home, fired 5 rds then cleaned it and found a minor amount of copper. Fired another 5 rounds, again cleaned it and this time just a blue smear on one patch. Last "break-in" test was 10 rounds before cleaning and nothing but powder fouling could be found. I cleaned the thing a couple more times just to be sure copper wasn't covered up by carbon but there really wasn't anything there.

I now have 325 rounds through the barrel since that 10 round group and accuracy is not opening up. I'm going to clean and foul it before the match next week but I would really like to find out how may I can put through it before accuracy starts to degrade!

I have found with the varmint contour that after 10-12 rounds of consistant firing (one round every 5-10 seconds) the POI will begin to shift. It's consistent though and I have been lucky at predicting the offset. I believe MTU and other heavies belong on bench/F-class rigs..

FYI: 139grain Scenar's with 42.8 grains of H4350 are getting me 2830fps out of the 22.5" stick and the barrel will put these rounds on golf balls at 400 yards, LOL. Pressure signs started for me at around 43.7. Be safe and work up your loads!

Edit: ..I also went with the 8 twist barrel
