With a budget of $500 is it possible to build a 260 Rem. I'm considering buying a 200 Stevens in .308win and switching the barrel out. Is there any other modification required other then getting the different barrel? Is there a cheaper way to go? Is there a short action mauser I should consider?

for a bit more than $500 you should be able fo find a new rifle in 260....

Wholesale Sports shows the Tikka T3 for $599

a used Rem 700 in 260 shouldn't be hard to find.

if you want to do the barrel swap, you will have to find something pre threaded and chambered from a company like adams & bennett to be cost effective. You can also count the money, about $100 that you can get for the take off 308 barrel against the total, which will give you a bit more room to play.

Thanks for the replies.

I would go with the 7mm-08 but I can't hunt with it in southern Ontario.

For small game hunting in Southern Ontario, I'd just get a .243 and a nice scope.:)

There are no cal retrictions for Big game, and you don't need a .260 to kill coyotes. Also worth looking at would be a .25-06.

Both can be had in the Stevens 200...
