hello guys :)

finally got to the point when I need a custom built target rifle.

My plan is: using a Rem 700P action, put together a competitive target rifle in .260Rem caliber (by gunsmith, of cause) :)

Going through the net, I`ve seen and read a lot of good articles on this subject.

But most rifles are built on Rem 700 action variants such us Surgeon, Bat and others using Krieger barrels, which are high quality actions and barrels (equal in quality)

My question is: does it worth combine Rem700 (even trued and blueprinted) action and a Krieger barrel, or use other less expensive ones.
Would it be like Mercedes motor on a FIAT? :)

Need your experienced advice :) and any input is very welcome :)

Top quality match barrels all shoot the same dispite a large range in pricing. There is just as much variations from barrel to barrel from the same company as they can be from brand to brand.

Just look for a brand with a competition pedigree and you will have a great barrel.

All the custom actions function exactly the same way as a fully tuned and prepped Rem. The popularity of customs today is because it just eliminates a whole step in prep work and they do look really nice. Plus there is a perceived value in a custom which can help with resale down the road.

The only real advantage with a custom is if you want a port style that is not available in a factory action ie RB/LP or bottom eject or if you want a lighter action. Some customs allow for easier bolt changes which is nice if you want to play with different cartridge families.

If you look, the vast majority of customs have the same footprint as the Rem 700. They are just machined to better tolerances out of the box but it does come at a cost.

There are many many F class matches won by tuned Rems so you not giving up anything if you go that route. But you are not necessarily saving a lot of money.

Another option is the Savage or Stevens and the route I now take. Equally accurate, substantially less money, lots of features I much prefer over a Rem or similar action.

The 260Rem is a gem and ideal if feeding from a mag. If single feeding as in F class, consider the improved version. I use it and much prefer it for great consistent performance.

Enjoy your build... Just remember there are some things you should pay for to get performance. Other things you pay for that will not result in smaller groups but may make you feel good.

CGN "Shockman" Just took a close second place in the PGWDTI 800 - 1000 yard F-Class match in Winnipeg shooting a 260 on an accurized Remington 700 and a Krieger barrel.

I shot the highest 900M score on the most challenging day with a 260 on accurized remmy and a Krieger barrel.

I have to disagree with the comment about barrel brands having great variation in results. Krieger is the most consistently excellent barrel I have ever used. That is why I got into bringing them in. They only sell one "quality" too; threre are no lesser grades for less money.

Remington actions are the overwhelmingly preferred choice of folks building an F-Class gun. They are strong as hell, they are absolutely safe, and they make easy switch-barrel platforms that do not need nuts or headspace gauges. You will also find more accessories for a Remmy than any other type.

The PGWDTI match had us complete a list of all our components and calibers. I look forward to seeing this.
