260 remington v.s. 6.5x55

6.5x55mm vs. .260 Rem?

I've already got a couple of factory sporter rifles in 6.5x55mm [Tikka 695 stainless synthetic and a Rem 700 Classic].... so right now I'm looking at a Tikka T3 in .260 for my next rifle... no particular reason other than 'just because'....

My preference is the 6.5x55, and it is not that hard to find ammo for.
Nor is it difficult to reload for. One or the other I'm sure you will do fine. :)

Doesn't the Tikka T3 light in .260 Rem have a 9" twist compared to the 8" in the Tikka T3 light in 6.5x55? I think ballistically they're quite similar but the 6.5x55 would be better suited with the heavier bullets.

Well I believe that if you wanted to load heavy bullets such as 160 gr. then the 6.5x55 is the way to go. Also the Swede loaded to European specs gets a bit more velocity than the .260 Rem. In the T-3 I'd go with the Swede.

my thoughts exactly. If you want a 260, find a rifle maker that produces an actual short action rifle

that being said, how is your new tikka t3 in 223 shooting? :D :pirate:

PS a 260 can push a 155 grainer to around 2600 fps, so its no slouch with the heavier bullets if the twist will handle it

Interesting comment, JP, and one I haven't heard before. Can you elaborate a bit? I was going to say that for non-handloaders, the .260 Remington is easier and cheaper to get high energy ammo for. Do you just find it easier to get an accurate load in the Swede?

I suspect that may be the case at the local Canadian Tire, but I've been to lots of shops which carry European brand ammo in 6.5X55, which is loaded pretty hot from what I understand; quite a bit hotter than any NA factory ammo...

Both good cartridges, personally I prefer the 260. Don't see any pro's or cons for either as far as reloading goes. There still seems to be some farely inexpensive euro-swede ammo about, often Berdan primed. Doubt it's any hotter than domestic loads.

I don't think the Igman stuff (cheap and ubiquitous) is any hotter, but some of the other brands are.

I know nothing about either cartridge, I have a daughter that wants to start hunting.
Which would you choose between the two.
It would be for deer
How would they perform on moose?
