What's your take on this cartridge? I looked it up and it's a .308 necked down to 6.5 mm, with the ballistics of a .300 Win Mag, low recoil, good barrel life and very accurate to boot. What's not to like?

I hope there is everything to like, I have one order that i am not so patiently waiting for. Everything I have heard and read says it is a great cartridge.

Low recoil, good barrel life, accurate. Yes. The ballistics of a 300WM? I don't think so.

260rem 100gr 3100fps
300win 110gr 3600fps

260rem 160gr 2550fps
300win 165gr 3100fps

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

to quote an article online

Compared to the venerable .300 Winchester Magnum's most common load - a 190-grain Sierra MatchKing at 2900 fps - the .260 has about 17% less wind drift and a few clicks less drop. Even though it shoots a 140-grain bullet, it still has 87% of the Magnum's energy at 1000 yards because its slim design yields a much higher ballistic coefficient (BC) value, so it retrains velocity longer. It also has 60% less recoil than the 300.

I've owned a few 260's over the past ten years. Six different rifles. It's a great cartridge, very accurate usually with most any load tried. Effective on any deer or similar sized game out to 400 yards and in a pinch can take moose or elk if needed. I've pretty much settled on the 130 grain bullet @ 2800-2850 fps for a hunting load now, either Nosler Accubond, Swift Scirocco or Barnes TSX

I can't speak from experience (still waiting impatiently for mine to arrive:(), but from all I've read it would seem to be a great varmint/hunting/target round.
So I'm looking forward to experimenting with another great offspring of the .308 win - a tip of the hat to all those wildcatters out there. Not to highjack this
thread, but has anybody tried out the 129 gr. Hornady SST's? Anyway, the 260 Rem. would seem to do a lot of things very well and for that reason I've
decided I'd better give it a try and see what all the fuss is about.;)

260REM 140gr 2600fps muzzle velocity, 200yd zero.

400yds drop 26in, 1881fps, 1100ft\lbs energy 14in drift\10mph wind

300WIN 150gr 3200fps muzzle velocity, 200yd zero

400yds drop 16in, 2380fps, 1891ft\lbs energy, 10in drift\10mph wind

While I do agree the 260rem can be effective on deer sized game to 400yds, I cannot agree that it is ballistically the same as a 300win. When it comes to Elk and Moose at 400yds I would fell alot better shooting the 300win.

nobody is claiming the 260 is a bigger hammer than a 300 Win Mag on big game, just that it is often compared to the external flight characteristics (drift/drop) of a 300 Win Mag w/ 190gr Sierra HPBT @ 2900 fps, when the 260 is loaded with a 142gr Sierra HPBT @ 2800 fps (which is easily doable with a 26" target barrel)

Slooshark, I usually use 43grs H4350 or 47grs H4831 to get 2800-2850 fps with a 130gr bullet.

358BLR, I've tried the 129gr SST and couldn't get them to group as well as the 120gr Nosler BT or 130gr Accubond etc. I wanted them to work, because they're pretty inexpensive and they have a high BC, and look to be a good deer bullet.

Superb for medium game and target, marginal for large game

260 Remington is a superb medium game and long range target round because of great Very Low Drag (VLD) bullets like the Sierra 142 MatchKing and superb 140gr hunting bullet like the Nosler Accubond.
When it comes to large game, it's somewhat marginal since 160gr 6.5mm bullets are round-nosed with low BC.

As a note, 270 Winchester can drive a 140gr at 2950 fps while 260 Remington 140gr gets 2700 fps (extra 125m of effective range)

All I'm sayin is if a comparison is done fairly the balistics are not the same. If you use handloads and a 26 inch barrel in both calibers the 260 is going 2800fps and the 300 would be going 3200. This makes for a big difference.

To me it's like saying my 302 motor will match your 351 motor in performance, but I get to build mine and yours remains factory.

Who says you need 160grn for moose? Because of the low recoil and excellent accuarcy you can put the bullet in their ear!! And I have! Dropped were it stood. And as for long shots, were I hunt moose your longest shot is gonna be 200yrds. And again when you scramble the grey matter it don't matter :)

But it's not if you consider BC. In order to get the sam BC of 140 grn .264 bullet in a 30 cal bullet, you have to step up to 180-190 grn bullet.

Thanks, that's good to know, I'll probably still try a box for exactly the reasons you mentioned: low price and high BC, maybe they'll work better out of a
different barrel (I have to try, right). The 130gr Accubonds look promising, but I'm sure they carry the typical Nosler price tag, although that won't stop me
from trying them either.

I had a 260 rem in a 700 mountain rifle. I wish I never sold it. I would highly recommend the 260 rem.

I too have a .260 Rem mountain rifle, i've put 5 rounds thru it , the first 4 were on paper and the 5th killed an elk with a shot to the head. I dont recall any thoughts about not having enough gun for the task at hand.
