Looking to redo my old rem 700 22-250 its all shot out and the ground hogs are extinct in my area any way . I'm thinking of 260 or 6.5-284 what would be the expected life of the two, avalibity of brass and any thought on barrel length

6.4/284 is a burner, 1200 rds is the typical barrel life. Lapua is the only brass I know of, unless you neck down some old Winchester.
260 is a very good cartridge. Remington (duh), Lapua and Norma make brass.

Between the two, I'd go for 260.

I have shot a 6.5-284 and 260AI. You can double your barrel life with the 260. Both are easy to find brass for. 6.5-284 brass is a little more expensive. Out of a 1 and 8 twist 30" barrel I was getting 2915 not pushing to hard.
I would suggest 260ai.

6.5x284 brass is available from Lapua, Hornady, and Norma I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I will speak highly of the 260rem, I love mine! ;)

260 for sure.
6.5x284 if you need the competitive edge, but if you shoot a lot it gets tedious working up loads every time you replace the barrel.
You'll only see 900 rounds of life if you're leaning on it. I shoot that in two months easily.

I have a 6.5 x 284 and shoots great, but I'll have to re-barrel sooner than a 260 Rem would.
If you're using the same platform, you'd be limited to the 260 Rem as the 6.5 x 284 is a Long Action and the 22-250 (and 260 Rem) are both Short Actions.

The 22 250 started life as a 270 action length is not a issue.I'm wanting a 1000yrd gun any other suggestions are welcome .I already have a 308 and would like something a bit flatter with low recoil

Would like to keep it below 270 so I could use it for varmints in some county's close to me there is a idiotic law making 270 the maximum sized rifle .how I'd the barrel life and recoil of the 284 ? I also have a 7mmrem mag and a7mmstw so I have lots of bullets kicking around that would fit it something to consider

If you have a long action, you could go for a 284win. Seat the heavies at mag length.

Great suggestion, on a long action I would recommend the same.

Barrel life is relative, it is no an overbored cartridge and at approximately 2800fps you should be getting 2500+ rounds. That statistic is purely based on people's experience I have read.

My 284 is too new to use my personal experience but I absolutely LOVE the cartridge. If you have some kind of restrictions and you reload, I would personally go 260AI.

I have both the 6.5-284 and the .260 Rem. I shoot 139 Lapua Scenars out of both and the accuracy of the two cartridges is quite comparable. Barrel life gives the .260 an edge in my opinion.

What rifle are you shooting the 260 Remington out of? What is your source of brass, .243 or .308? Do you reload?

Heres the specs.

Savage 11 (300WSM action)
Bartlein 5R 1-8 twist .260 finished at 24" with a AAC single chambered brake.
PTG fluted bolt body with matching head.
Glades Armoury bolt knob
ATRS 20moa Rail
Vortex 34mm Precision Match Rings
Vortex Razor 5-20 EBR-2C
XLR Element Chassis

My brass is usually Remington surprisingly, The rifle seems to like it quite well. Ive used Lapua but have had good luck recently with remington.
and yes I reload. pull the trigger on a tube and you won't be disappointed.

I would definitely go 260 in this case as barrel life will be double or more over the 6.5X284. One shooter friend lost his 6.5X284 barrel at 950 rounds, another shooter friend just lost his 260 barrel at 3000++ and the 260 was being pushed hard. I find the 260 pretty easy to load for as well, obviously there is a great selection of bullets available for either one and brass is not an issue with Lapua making excellent ready to use (almost, I chamfer and deburr and set neck tension on all new brass).

I am currently shooting a straight up 284 win, using Lapua 6.5X284 brass necked up, CCI BR2 primers, H4831SC and Lapua 180 Scenars. This rifle is rocking' and is an absolute hammer! I am running it soft right now at 2785fps from my 28" tube but it still only needs 9mils to reach 1000 meters. I am going to experiment and see if I can find the next accuracy node as a shooter friend is running a very similar set up at a touch over 2900fps and is reporting excellent accuracy.

And I find a 260 is perfect in a short action but the 284 really needs a long action to get the benefit of the case capacity and seating the bullets out where they belong.

Is it posable to have my cake and eat it too ? I noticed that the 260 hottest loads are comparable to the 6.5 284 starting loads so if I worked up a low end and a high end velocity load could I extend the barrel life of a 6.5 284 barrel if I only used the top end on windy days ?

The 260ai will be more comparable to the 6.5-284
